Insurance for a second car

I'm with Sky for the Supra, full no claims, paying just under £700.

The other day I got a shite lpg Astra for commuting into London, and they want another £500 odd. Even the ring-around for the other insurance companies ask for that, or in most cases a lot more. Is it normal to have to pay so much for a second car? I mean I can only drive one car at a time.

Nah it is not normal - it is just this specific company do not accept no-claims bonus on second car (LPG Astra in this case). I know this sounds stupid, but you have 5 years on n-c on Supra and 0 years on n-c on Astra. Try Norwich Union - they accepted my 5 years no claims bonus from Cavalier (which i still have) when i was insuring Supra.

Edit: I'm paying 330 pounds insurance for Cavalier :) And 750 for Supra.

I haven't had an accident or a claim in 20 years driving. But they want me to insure the Astra with zero no claims. It's a daft system

It's yet another example of insurance companies ripping off the public - and getting away with it.

However if you have an accident in either car it'll affect your no claims on BOTH policies.

Insurance companies are cnuts, including Sky.

....especially since they tried to charge me 20% of my yearly premium for me to add a single turbo for the last 10 days of the policy!!

Unless they come up with something better I won't be renewing with them next week.

I have stuck with direct line for years, until recently when they have become insanely uncompetitive. I searched around and found a half decent quote with both Bell and Admiral, within a few £ of each other - now the missus decides to get a car and I spot a multicar ad for admiral. She has 0 years no claims etc no owning before, I have 7 years nc on my Supe (and prev car), they (Admiral) offer me bonkers discount for both cars - can't complain. Obviously they wont replace like for like with a standard policy, but letting them know what I have modified (and even plan to have modified) - my quote was bonkers low - £470. It all depends on the type of cover you want but fully comp, legal etc (but not like for like replacement) -

Too true. When I bought the 911, it was the first car I had in my name. I had been riding bikes for about 10 years and had full NCD on one policy - but I wasn't allowed to use it. "Bike and car policies are separate".

However - I had a bike stolen a couple of years previously - and in that case, it seemed bike and car policies were not quite so separate. So I was not allowed to use my bike NCD - but the motorcycle theft was used when quoting me.

It's just a win win situation for an insurer.

Im insured through Sky and have 7 YNCB on the Supra, i asked about a second car through them and they have taken into consideration the NCB on the supra and given me the equivalent discount of 4 on the Peugout. It still works out at £400 but then again i am only 24. Aks them about it because they do take the NCB into consideration and give you a discount on the second car.

seems I bit expensive to me as well. Are you sure the advisor understod that you had max bonus on another policy with us. We do have a scheme that enables you to mirror your no claims bonus across more than one policy. If you call back ask the advisor to refer your quote to Jae, I am at another branch today but they can still reach me.

just like to add that i also seem to be getting shafted for my insurance by Sky.

having sold the Supra for which i was paying £80 per month fully comp. i got a quote from other insurers online to see how my Audi 80 would compare (cheapest was £316 per annum).

Thinking i would be looking at £40 per month payments maximum through Sky i rang them to be told it would be reduced to £58!!! for an Audi 80!!!

of course i won't cancel as i'd then lose out on six months no claims bonus.

not chuffed :badmood:

Unfortunately that can happen, the company we have you insured with specalises in Japanese and modified cars. So they are not always going to be the cheapest for an Audi, thats why will can only quote you there premium mid term and look at other insurers at renewal.

That's interesting Jae  when I renewed my Fiesta in October as a second car through you I had only one year No Claims, as the full 7 years was being used on the Supra. Even though my father as a second driver has full no claims (which doesn't count as he doesn't own the car) Scott mentioned that I could only get an introductory bonus - equivalent to 1 years no claims last year when I first took the policy out. Not a mirrored policy.

Sorry didn't make myself clear. When I refer to a mirror bonus policy it mens we allow the equivalent discount from the first policy to the second policy without actually using the no claims bonus. So your policy has 1 yrs ncb but your discount is 65%.

i had to pay 700 quid for the lagunas insurance and its only 3rd party!!! 600 fully comp for the sup through tesco..

the reason they gave me is because they treat it like a new policy with 0 no claimes discount.

tryed admeral multicar.... thinking yay. they wanted to charge me 1500 quid for the sup....:Pling: then 500 for the laguna and said thats a good price.

i said no thankyou.

when i joined Sky after getting the Supra Oct 2005, i had two cars and put all the NCB on the Supra and kept the Carlton as the 2nd car.

have talked to Sky, the other day, and had it confirmed today, that they will mirror the same figures onto the Carlton. prior, the Carlton had been done with a discount instead.

on checking today, even saved me a further 50UK off the Carlton renewal in the process.

Supra as main car, Carlton as 2nd car, but both covered the same, so very happy :D

very happy all-around with the way Sky have handled everything :D
