mkirby
buying the wife a car for christmas as a suprise now she wants a 2 seater sporty convertible so ive been looking at cars and i know she loves the MGF's and the MX5's so i need to decide which one?? i have around £4k to spend but she doesnt like the mk1 mx5's with the pop up head lights!! but i may stretch a little higher for a mk2 mx5 but if she's honest she prefers the MGF but i must think of reliability etc so opinions please Mike
martin_a
MX5 unless you want to go through headgaskets like mad. In fact get her a lada, she clearly knows nothing about cars and as such won't appreciate the fine handling and rear wheel drive action and thus doesn't deserve anything better than an eastern block tank. m. MG F's are supposed to be crap reliability wise. the TF is supposed to be o.k, but i wouldnt go for the F, plus it looks c*ap from the front. in my opinion dont get any of them. Roadster are poo full stop
DaveK
If I was buying that kind of car (and I hope I never do!) - it would definitely be MX5 all the way. I have no experience of either - and I'm still 100% sure the MX5 will be a million times more reliable / better build quality than the MGF. Of course, this kind of patriotic attitude might explain what happend to Rover.

Havard
Keep away from the MGF they are cursed. Not a bad looking car but the build quality is awful. My sister in law bought a brand new one a couple of years ago. She paid 17K for it. She drove it to our house from the showroom and straight away I could see the wings were not fitted properly and the convertible roof pissed water in. Oh and when she'd had enough of its problems, she lost a fortune. Once you have jap you don't go back. How about an old MR2? H.
Todd
go for the 5, cracking cars, missus has had one for 3.5yrs now and just bought her another one after a brief fling with a MK3 MR2. Love the MK2 MR2 as well but wouldn't get one for the missus, the mid engine layout can be a handful in the damp wet roads.

I have two nice cars and she has a £1500 R Reg Ford Ka. And in fact, I don't think she's that happy I bought the Supra and sold the nice practical Focus that she liked driving. Still - in my favour, I did actually buy and insure the Ka for her - and that wasn't actually a christmas / birthday present so she can't complain!
