RedM
We have a standing charge of about £30 but our phone calls per quarter only average out to about £5. Obviously we are paying for a service we barely use. The only reason we keep it is because we need a landline for our broadband. Is there anything I can do to reduce the costs but without resorting to cable?

RedM
I should add that our broadband isn't with BT but we do need a BT line, do we not?
Daston
Ahh I see ok I am with OneTel for land line (part of carphone warehouse) it costing me 9.99 a month line rental with free evening and weekend calls
RedM
Do you get any bills from BT? I'm assuming that your OneTel monthly fee is them passing the BT charge across at no extra.
Daston
Onetel use there own line and every thing all I get charged for from BT is my Broadband
RedM
Onetel use there own line and every thing all I get charged for from BT is my Broadband I don't think that Onetel use their own line in the same way that Tesco don't get electricity to you through their own national grid. I'm assuming Onetel lease the line off BT and pass on a minimum charge.
penguin
RedM, yep - you don't have to have a line from bt - secondly depending on who your bb supplier is - you may be able to get your existing line switched over saving you silly money (er... which you can use to buy me a giant penguin)
jamesmark
Ok Onetel and Talk Talk DO NOT have there own line, they charge you for line rental but BT still looks after it and gets paid by Onetel or Talk Talk, the line rental is not worth changing as the hassle you will get when there is a fault is not worth it and I think the difference is £1.00 tops iirc. It is a severe pain as I am with Talk Talk and I have not had Broadband for 4 weeks Tomorrow and I have a fault with the line, but I get my line rental is with TT and they have to raise a fault with BT. You have to stick with the line rental and moving from BT is going to save maybe £12 per annum and for the hassle like what I am going through it's not worth it. Onetel was owned by British Gas and sold to Talk Talk so we still sell it British Gas customers.
penguin
good point james... i'm with newnet, and had my service "regraded" on friday - the damn thing took out my 3com router and 2 phone lines .... since then - NOTHING ... new phones work on the line - new adsl modem seems to connect to something - but not newnet - have configured settings etc etc but f-all spoke to newnet who said it seems something is wrong with the bt end and gave me a 5 day timescale
Kranz
Just got a letter from Tiscali saying that they will start doing line rental plus broadband for £20 a month. That's £5 a month for the line. Free UK calls too, so there must be a good saving over BT?
Daston
not bad but what internet does that include download speed/limit
RedM
Im summary then, all these 3rd party companies do is lease the line from BT and sub-let it to you at a slight discount although you are fooked if there are any hassles.
