JohnA
Disclaimer: Please don't take my views personally, I comment only based on how I see these events, based on your description. Also note that what works for me or others will not necessarily work for everyone else. It has to blend with one's character, otherwise it feels fake and the opponents can sense bull from far away. .... I saw a pay and display space and indicated, and then put on my hazzards to show the car behind me I was going to parellel park. I stuck the car in reverse and the car behind me overtook to go past knowing I was parking. So your intention to 'claim' the space might have not been clearcut to someone else further behind, right? there's a BMW X5 (which would have been behind the car that overtook me) up my arse who's half pulled in to the space. Possession is 90% of ownership, come on, you know that I wait for a few seconds bemused over what the guy's done, you waited? a couple of seconds are enough to lose the 'claim' in such cases! wind down the window to ask him what the hell he was doing ooops, another mistake: You should have jumped out immediately. Winding down the window shows laziness and lack of commitment to 'fight' for 'your' space. Don't laugh, perceptions are everything .. to which he said something like "get out of my space". ooops, he's already claimed it. Since he is nearer, it's his now! ...He got out of his car, I asked if he lived around here, he said yes I live around the corner, "where do you live?", turns out we live in the same block. Looks like both of you want to appear tough and intimidating, without actually risking broken noses, gouged eyes or severed limbs. The signals of an aggressive homicidal lunatic are clear, and you guys emit none of that. ....so as said earlier, possession is 90% ownership. He has already won. ...I said I would report him to the police, how lame. He has done nothing illegal, so it is an empty threat (and he knows it!) What's worse, you admit to being powerless at this stage ("my big brother will beat you up", kind of thing) Even worse, reporting him to the police means that you will make yourself #1 suspect if something happens to him or his car later on. to which he said "do you want me to beat the f*ing crap out of you?". Well, this was your chance to say 'yes' and have him make the first move in front of witnesses. But you chickened out, right? When it comes to Power Games, you need some training fella! ellis
Now where I come from, that sort of reply is more heinous than nicking a parking space!!
JohnA
The way I see it there are 3 possible courses of action: 1. Decide it's not worth the aggro, put it on experience and move on to find another space. Next time move faster/make intentions clearer/whatever 2. Decide it's not worth a physical fight (potential injuries/lawsuits/embarrassment/whatever) but want to get back at the prick 3. Spur of the moment, decide that 'enough is enough' this character will NOT be allowed to use his 4x4 to push through - at any cost. #1 is best for karma, well being and social grace. Be above all, guru sort of thing. Clearly not the case here. #2 is more petty, but if you make noises (and present yourself to the police!) then there is no element of surprise and it's like shooting one's own foot #3 is the least intelligent and childish, but if you take that route, best do it right. Be quick, loud, abusive, intimidating, aggressive. Chances are the prick won't even dare open the window, he'll just booger off to find another space. Who would want to face a maniac? They've got no face to save either, because they've had no chance to say anything regretful. That's how I see it, anyway...
merckx
he said "do you want me to beat the f*ing crap out of you?". For this alone you've got to do something, any civilised person doesn't talk like this. Fill his exhaust with expanding foam!

francis
Well thanks for your replies guys. I'm not usually the confrontational type, you get a lot of shit from drivers in London and I've learnt over the years to let it pass, but this guy really was taking the piss. He was the sort of guy who you couldn't reason with, he thought it was his space and that was that. I didn't care about the parking space, I just went around the block and found a better residents bay, the issue here was the principle. I'm not the kind of person to go back and key his car, especially not as he lives down the street from me, things would escalate and it would just be silly. Anyway I left a note on his car last night saying: -- I wanted to inform you that I have filed a report with the police for your abusive and threatening behaviour towards me at 6:40pm on the 16th November 2006 and will be taking the matter as far as is possible within the law. In the five years I have lived in this area I have never come across anyone so arrogant, abusive and poor at driving as you quite clearly demonstrated today. I hope you will consider the consequences of your actions on and off the road a little more carefully in the future. -- The matter is concluded. Hopefully he'll have a think and realise he can't just do as he pleases, treat people like shit and completely get away with it.

JohnA
...Hopefully he'll have a think and realise he can't just do as he pleases, treat people like shit and completely get away with it. Very noble indeed:cool: Reminds me how idealistic I was back in my teens. (bah, I was already evolving into a cynical asshole)
ross
Give it a while, then cut some cardboard into a shape just bigger than his number plate, write WANKER on it on big bold permanent marker and cellotape it over his number plate. Most people never check their cars before they get in and drive away. Everyone will know what he is. Course I'm only joking. By the way, JohnA, have you ever read any books by Geoff Thompson? You seem to think just like him.
grahamc
explain one thing to me please... How do you get onto the subject of where each other lives, when you should have been telling him to move his fat ass the hell out of your space. grahamc
How could most of the people on this forum (car enthusiast forum) be willing to damage someone elses car? How would feel if some did that your cars? I have seen a couple of threads in the past where people going about how chavs have just keyed there car, etc.
imi
BMW Drivers.... Well, tbh - I think the problem was with the guy and not necessarily the BMW.....(cant believe I am defending a BMW)

imi
The matter is concluded. Hopefully he'll have a think and realise he can't just do as he pleases, treat people like shit and completely get away with it. Hmm...so you say that he is NOT a guy that you can reason with yet you left him a note on his screen to piss him off. Since you dont drive a crappy common Beamer, instead an individual and unique supra, its very easy for a low life piss off bafoon like him to key YOUR car or slash YOUR tyres.... There are clearly two options only. - Either you be the agressor and hopefully he isnt up for a fight, but if he is, then you have to be prepared for a proper brawl. - Or, just let it be, its only a parking space, you talk about principles yet refer to him as an "arrogant, abusive and poor at driving as you quite clearly demonstrated today" - why the hell would he care about being the nice guy...?
