Doughie
Folks (apologies for slightly over-wordy post) my mkiv has (I believe) a suspension issue in that it feels distinctly unsettled and bouncy on exit of corners when attacked even *moderately*. I'm not talking 10/10ths driving here, but taking a corner (for example the exit of a largish roundabout) reasonably quickly. Basically the back end of the car feels as if it is bouncing as the power is applied. My diagnosis from the driving seat is that the rear dampers are either shot, or simply under-damped, as it feels they are failing to control the rear end from bouncing up and down as the rear end squats slightly as power is applied. Toyota and various others have said the dampers aren't leaking fluid. My car has had not too long ago a full optical suspension geometry alignment (just before i bought it) so i don't think it's that. Tyres are good, correct pressures etc. Car has always been like this since i bought it in August 2000, but it's starting to bother me and i want it fixed ! (although I am a bit reluctant to fit aftermarket suspension as it may lower the car too much) It's a UK Mkiv, only 46,000 miles, nicely treated etc. I simply don't know if all UK mkiv's are like this, or whether there is a problem with my car. Is it possible that (even though the dampers aren't leaking) that they have deteriorated sufficiently to cause this ? Is it possible that the springs have softened sufficiently to let the car bounce around ? Anyone else out there with a UK mkiv that has felt this ? Has anyone any other suggestions as to what it might be or things to check ? As i say, it feels to me like the rear of the car simply isn't damped properly (for whatever reason) which is letting it counce around and i have to let it sort itself out beofre re-applying power. Flavio
Hi Stuart, I think the first thing you should do is have your shocks tested on a testbench at Kwikfit or something. This will give you proof whether they are gone or not. Flavio
