Nearly blew the house up last night!

Was making a chocolate sponge thing last night, (the type you leave in the can and shove in a pot full of boiling water for 35mins) so went and lay on the couch waiting for it to be ready. I next remember waking up about four hours later. I'd forgotten all about the pudding thing by now. Turned the gas fire off(!) then wandered through to the kitchen.

Dicovered the tin had exploded showering the entire kitchen with chocolate. This must also have blown the hob out which had subsequently filled the entire house up with gas  . Opened all the windows wide and went out to try to sleep in the car for a few hours. Went back in when I though it might be safe to go to bed to discover the rain had soaked the entire bed through the wide open window. :(

I really don't know how the whole place didn't go up. Properly sunk in today that I'm very lucky not to be in little bits by now.

Blooming eck, sounds like you were very very lucky indeed. That could have been one sleep you didn't wake up from.

I read the story to my other half who just informed me of this: For future reference, with tined puddings you can remove them from the tin, put them on a plate, put a bowl over the top and cook for 4 minutes in the microwave - it steam cooks it in the same way much quicker...

not that you would ever make that mistake again but it might be worth knowing next time you fancy some chocolate pudding - mmm yum yum

Believe it or not i think if memory serves me correctly, if you filled up the house with gas (over 25%) it would not explode if you lit a match! Gas is at its most explosive between 15% and 25%.

Anyway looks like you had a close call.
