Keith C
Had the car in at Jemca Toyota in Sidcup (formerly McCarthy Toyota) and they informed me that the V160 fluid has been superceded by a variant of Dexron ATF. I naturally queried this, and spoke to the technician who did the work (a former Lexus man who's worked on Supra's so long he used to do PDI's on them) and he said that yes, they used to have to have their own stuff, but now that Dexron have 'caught up' and that their ATF is suitable for use in the 6-speed box. I just wondered if others had encountered similar, or if anyone had any comments?
SimonB
Sounds dodgy to me. Why would Automatic Transmission Fluid be suitable for a manual? I changed mine about a year ago and got V160 no problem. Well actually it was a problem because Toyota ordered the wrong stuff, couldn't find it on their computer and I had to tell them the part number, but that's pretty normal! Don't know much about oils though, so he could be right.
Soonto_HAS_soop
Stick to the V160 oil. I got told by my local dealership that they use that Dexron stuff, but then they told me that was because they get big drums of that and only that. When I asked to order some v160, they told me straight out that no other oil was available. When I phoned them back 5 minutes later with the part number the told me that it was suspension oil for the Supra and not gearbox oil. I don't go to Toyota now without a part number. Ben.. Chris Wilson
In fairness a lot of manual MKIV 6 speed gearboxes have a factory " ATF only " sticker around the filler plug, so in theory ATF SHOULD be ok, but how lucky do you feel withan expensive transmission? I stick to the correct Toyota lubricant, which so far has remained available without comment from my Toyota dealer.

Keith C
Well, I've decided I'm going to go with it for the moment, as if if does turn out to cause problems, I'll be able to go back to them. It is why I take it to them after all.
Keith C
Ok, just got off the phone to Toyota HQ, and they said in no uncertain terms that V160 is the only stuff to use. I've lodged a case with them, and have already contacted the dealer to let them know and that I will be expecting them to change the oil FOC. I'll let you know how I get on.
