Carl Posted November 13, 2006 Share Posted November 13, 2006 Went to watch this film the other night. Wasn't sure what to expect but turned out to be quite an interesting film. It's not particularly fast pace or action packed but does have a few twist & turns in the plot. At times it can get quite confusing. If your after something a little different then go see it. Hated it just something I couldn't get into, trying to hard to be like Memento IMO (now that was a good film). Would put Empire of the Sun as his 2nd best.....to date! But it wasn't, was it? ....just wondering, that's all.... A more favourite of mine (in the same vein) is David Lynch's Mullholand Drive. Once you realise that 95% of the 'events' are figments of her imagination, some based on real characters and some on wishful thinking - then you watch it again to see what exactly is 'real' and what is made-up (and to what extent) Brilliant. Hes so good! so varied! unlike the worst actor ever: huge grant, he can play anything!! P.s, how did they do the whole skinny thing in the machinest?! cant work it out?! Jesus christ!!! i cant believe thats actually him in reality !! bloddy nora thats comitment!!! he could of had seroius health issues and possible even died at that kind of weight!! he must have been so hungry all the time, and to think he would have had to work hard with no energy!! Vanilla Sky is more lightweight compared to the others. this genre fuses reality with fantasy, it's all about subjective perception. We see what we want to see and we hear what we want to hear. We interpret events the way that suits us and that is *reality* as far as we are concerned. Jackob's ladder is another good example, as well as 'Wrong Turn' or similar, it was on Sky a couple of years back. In Jackob's ladder all 'events' are manufactured inside a soldier's head while he is dying on the operating table. Same with Mullholand drive, 95% of 'events' are a hallucinating dream while the girl is dying on the bed. People she actually met play different roles in her dream, according to her wishes and desires. The fun in all these films is dissecting the story and weeding out the 'real' events. Donny Darko was a bit different, because it was toying with the idea of time-travel and alternative universes. Awesome soundtrack, too. If you liked Memento then you'll love this. Also watched The Illusionist with Edward Norton, very similar in some respects to The Prestige and just as enjoyable. The machinist - also very good film Bales dedication to his roles is seemingly limitless. Mullholland Drive - While an excellent film to watch, it was seriously confusing I had to look up the true meaning on the net and then it made more sense... Lynch is a genious (or a lunatic) I've loved his work since I saw Dune in the mid 80's... How did you watch the illusionist? Didn't think that was out yet...? Vanilla sky was just trippie - not a big fan... Copland also a cracker, who would have thought Stallone could really act:search: Illusionist is available on DVD in the states just now, got a torrent of the dvd rip. I love it when that happens... I'm a bit nuts about movies, it's my second most expensive hobby We got a cinema pass last year to watch as many films as we want for £10.99 per month. Reason why it's very similar to Memento is no doubt due to having the same director Christopher Nolan having an influence on the screenplay.
