Thinking of getting a vauxhaul Calibre for a run around car either the 2L se or 2.5V6 any idea's what's the best if the 2 to go for for reliabilty so on & so on ???????????????

Been looking on auto trader & for around £1,500 you can pick up one of the fully loaded heated leather interior / air con / fully electric's ect

Just thought for the money & run around looks this might be an ideal car.

What's your thoughts on this ???????????????

Any one on here know of a good condition one going for around that sort of price ????????

the SE is best for reliability. It is the 8v engine you want. Not sporty, but if it has been cared for it will last a long time.

The V6 is less reliable, and a pain in the ass for some things (like changing the rear plugs)

The 16v engines are the best compromise of performance/reliability

However, if you want reliability, 'Calibra' is not the first word that springs to mind, lol....

A jap car would fare better most probably

My eldest had a couple before getting his WRX. Both nice cars and spares readily available. If you go for the 8V you can pick up engine parts from most breakers as it's a common engine used in loads of Vauxhalls and Opels. So with that in mind they have the reliability of say an astra which are reckoned to be reliable. Go surprisingly well I always thought as well. He had a decat and a nice exhaust and fitted a whopping induction kit with various cold air feeds from the front spoiler which really seemed to make a difference over the stock air box. Also another nice touch, these are fitted with headers as standard. But I would say that £1500 is a bit rich. He flogged his for a grand and had loads of stuff fitted, 17"s, lowering kit, leather interior, boot loader all the usual stuff and it took a lifetime to sell, although the guy who did buy it travelled 100s of miles as he wanted this one. So I guess its horse for course and all that stuff.

i'll go for the 2.0 16v redtop (pre-ecotec):)

I had a H reg one of these but it was 4x4. I had it for 4 years before it gave up the will to live, it had only done just over 100,000 miles and i'd only done about 30,000 in that time.

It was the most unrealiable car i've ever had. Here are just a few of the things that went wrong that i can remember even though i kept up with the full Vauxhall services...

-the 4x4 gearbox

-water pump

-steering rack

-cat

-various sensors

-broken speedo

-fuel leak

-miss fire / hesitation

-major oil leak

-wheel arches rust

I ended up part exchanging it in 1999, i left it parked about 100 yards away from the dealer so when i done the deal i was off in a shot before he could change his mind !:innocent:

its put me off of Vauxhalls for life.

A girl at work bought a spanking brand new Tigra, its gone back to the dealers 4 times and been replaced twice already.

Toyota rules !!!;)

Were the 4x4s not all Turbos?

Interesting stuff :)

there were a few made on the non turbo 4x4, i think they were special edition on the H reg. mine certainly was special !

the 4x4 killed the standard clutch, i forgot to mention i got through a few of those too, even tho there really wasn't enough power to warrent the 4x4 (unless it was raining).

also my bruv in law had the 8 valve version which was as quick as mine. Mine might have been slower than a 2 wheel drive 16v due to extra weight ?

Yeah, there were indeed some early 4x4 versions with the non-turbo engines. Slower than 2wd and flimsy gearboxes (will self-destruct if the tyres were not rotated regularly and if the accumulator bulb is not changed every 5 years.)

Most useless dealers don't know this, and once the punter changes to a new set of front tyres, disaster strikes!

Like most makes of cars, I am sure there are as many dogs as there are good ones. Toyota too have made a few dogs in their time dont you think? But have to say over the years I have had quite a few Vauxhalls, and in fact still own one. I have always found them to be pretty reliable and more to the point if used as the thead originator intended, as a runabout, they are fixible cheaply and easily when they do go wrong. When they introduced the first FWD models in the 80s they changed the way most big manufactuers went about building cars.

I have a corsa diesel dog of a van but although it looks a heap it is great. I have abused it on the worst Eastern European roads you could imagine, run it on Parifin, vegie oil and every different colour of heavy oil you can think of and it has been good to me. I can pick up bits from my local breakers nice and cheap and generally speaking there is not much you cant do yourself at home, and I believe the Calibra is much the same.

My bird runs a Tigra and apart from a few little probs with the ECU warning light, had no probs at all in 3 years. In fact we just put it through a MOT and went straight through, 100K+ miles on the clock. Done little in the way of servicing since she bought it, think I did the cam belt, filters and changed the oil when she bought it, and only had to change the rear wheel bearings and plug leads since.

She drives from kent to mine in Northants most weekends and went on a road trip to France in the summer. I reckon, and I base this on the ones I have owned, Vauxhalls are pretty reliable. Had a few fords and they have all been total crap as were manyof the others I have used.

Probably regret saying this, but reckon a Calibra would be a great daily drive car, sorry guys.

Mind you, I was born in Luton, home too of the PA cresta and loads more GM heaps!!
