Chiefgroover
1. Whats the red button with jap writing at it for? 2. My car has a strong tendancy to creep forward quite fast? whats up? 3. When holding my foot on the brake and car is in drive it rumbles through the body, is this normal on a vvti, mates Uk spec doesnt do these things. As you can tell, I know as much about auto trans as I know about jet engines.

Chiefgroover
2. car will go forward when in drive at tickover, mates Uk spec stays stationary. It almost an effort to keep the car from going forward at the lights.

It almost an effort to keep the car from going forward at the lights. Oh I see. Yeah, that's quite normal. Both my autos do it. When the engine is cold, from a standing start on flat ground I can (eventually) get into 3rd gear without touching the throttle at all. Jake did you post me that disc? please? Yes mate, last week. Thursday I think it was
ivan
1. You should definitely know better.
JohnA
First I thought this is a windup. But if you hadn't had an auto before (I didn't!) then I guess they're reasonable questions. Yes, it's normal for the car to want to creep forward in D. You should need to press the brake pedal if you want to be stationary in D. The power it takes to push the car slowly forward like this in D, is roughly the amount wasted in transmission losses in the torque converter (don't worry, it's only fluid slipping internally, it's not a clutch) Makes start-stop traffic a breeze, you just leave in 'D' and regulate with the brake pedal. Chiefgroover
ok so my mates 94 jap car is the odd one as it doesnt creep forward. I am really getting to like the auto tip, but I dont fancy it for track work.

npotts
Hi mate I had a tiptronic vvti, and it also did questions 2 and 3 - I wouldnt worry about it...
martin_a
tiptronic? anyway as said quite normal. Your mates car might be the one that is cream crackered with a worn torque convertor. you can replicate this in amnual, if you pull the clutch up and don't touch the accelerator the car will creep forward. Most electronic fuel and ECU systems will adjust the idle for the load on the engine, this means that at very low revs the car won't stall (don't stick it in second and pull clutch up it will stop but very slowly in 1st...) as the clutch is engaged (same as putting car into 'D') and revs are being applied the car will move forward. m.
