These guys had a career long battle that began when they first started out racing in the states, and ended up battling it out in the world stage in 500gp. When Rainey took a dive into the gravel and broke his back in '93, Schwantz went on to win the title (his only one) and subsequently retired mid season the following year claiming "there was no one left to race" I absolutely loved this era of racing. I had my little fs1-e at the time and admired these guys so much. Reminds me of a lot earlier when we used to sneak into Mallory Park (lived just over the fields from it) to watch the Italian champion Giacomo Agostini being beaten (sometimes) by the cheeky young Barry Sheene.
