peter richards
dont do much buying , but tried to buy something tonight , there was only one other person bidding , but he seemed to have the upper hand on me all the time . so rather than push the price up i waited with the next bid and with about 15 seconds left put it in , but still lost it to him ?????????. should i have waited longer say only 5 seconds , advice for future bidding appreciated thanks peter:(
Jake
Leave it till the last few seconds, say 10 secs, and then bid the maximum you're willing to pay. Usually you'll get it for a lot cheaper but if you still lose it doesn't matter because it went for more than you were willing to pay.

Could be that he had bid an amount higher then you right at the start. ie. Item comes up for 99p Knob A Bids £15 - Item shows 1 bid, item at 99p Peter bids £1.05 (Cheapskate) - Item shows 3 bids, item at £1.50 (Knob A's higher bid has jumped in. Peter then bids £5 - Item shows 5 bids, item at £5.50. and so on. 15 secs before the end:- Peter bids £13 Knob A wins the Item for £13.50 Is that what you mean? Post a link to the item and we can look at the bid history.
Pabs
some people use automatic bidding software to win auctions. I've tried one once out of curiosity, and it worked well The s/w can bid for you as many times as necessary up to your maximum limit. and it can do it with 5 seconds to spare too, saving you the hassle of sitting there and refreshing the screen. grimreaper
as above the best thing to do it bid the most you will pay for an item then see if you win.

dangerous brain
Auction sniper works a treat but only if the situation mr ralph man suggests isn't in play. Only way to find that out is outbid early on.

DaveK
I've one everything I wanted on ebay by doing what Jake said. Bidding earlier is pointless - you just force the price up. Wait for the last few seconds, bid the max you'll pay - chances are you will win.
