Jake
My mate has a PC which is connected to the net via NTL (cable rather than DSL). Now he wants to also connect to the net via his two laptops at the some location using the same broadband connection. The laptops both have Wireless already. What do I need, a router? Most of the ones I'm seeing on the net seem to be for ADSL rather than cable. Edit to add; seems like either one of these Linksys ones would work, right? Would I still need to use the existing cable modem or do these replace that?
michael
The WRT54G will replace the existing modem and give wireless access, the one above it will have to used with the current one. It's the same as doing it for ADSL but there are less to choose from, that Linksys seems to be decent value for money though.
Thorin
Never had cable but yeah that should be fine, and replace the existing modem. I believe the cable connection is just ethernet anyway?

Yep - you just need to make sure the router has an ethernet interface/port
Burna
I'm on cable and use a linksys wireless router like this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Linksys-WRT54GL-UK-Wireless-Router-4-Port/dp/B000ETX928/sr=8-7/qid=1163073995/ref=sr_1_7/026-2772969-4658835?ie=UTF8&s=electronics Just plug the cable from the cable modem into the router and away you go
Jake
Well it turned out that he hasn't got a standalone cable modem, he's got a NTL set-top box which the existing pc was connected to via ethernet. We bought one of these : http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?LIN-WRT54G and connected the PC to that and from that to the set-top box. On the desktop PC we ran the setup CD that came with the router and now the wireless is working fine (on the laptops) but the desktop PC now can't connect to the internet. It always comes up with an NTL set up page and you can't get past that. I guess I need a NTL setup CD or sonething but he doesn't know where it is and I can't find anything useful on the NTLHome web site. :Grrrrr:
