I personally wouldnt go through Jessops, you can find much cheaper by searching through pricerunner, and I wouldnt buy the samsung purely as she may be limited on lenses in the long run, tbh I'd recommend getting a canon maybe the 350d

I've bought from here too and they are very good, I went for a nikon d70 but with the type of photography I'm doing I may be changing to a canon as they have a much wider range of lenses and the lens is the big factor in photography :)

Yes, I agree about the samsung, also about looking else where, but ring jessops first and see if they are still doing the beat the price deal. I found a website (has to be uk based) which sold the Canon Eos 350D cheaper than Jessops. Few months ago Jessops had a deal where they would match the cheaper price, but also take another 10% off. So i rang them, gave them the web address of the cheaper price so they could check. with p&p i think it came to about a pound more than the other website price, but with Jessops being a bigger company, i felt safer buying from them. I looked up http://www.pricerunner.co.uk for the cheapest price. So worth a call to Jessops, you never know, they may well still have the offer on. As for choice of camera, go for a canon or nikon slr, (pick canon, pick canon lol)

Jessops is good because it is a high street shop and you can bring it back if anythings wrong. Price is higher but if they price match then I would choose them over the net.

In terms of DSLR, I am using a cannon 300d and thats is the very first model of dslr. most of the entry level dslr will have all the function a beginner needed so spend less on the body and the money saved goes toward a lens in the future. I find that camera is not the most expensive part of photography, the lens is.

When I was looking for my DSLR (E-500 and LOVING it), I found the best deal was on the Currys website - internet deal only but they were out of stock. So I wandered into local currys, told them about the internet deal and said that if they could match it, I would buy there and then. The lad in there did a quick tappetytap on the keyboard and said yes he could match that deal instore.

I got the E-500 twin lens kit, bag, portable printer, 1gb memory card etc, for £500.

They're still doing the same deal, but it's a bit dearer now although still a good deal.

I have just ordered the new canon 400d, going to pick it up from dixons duty free at Gatwick on my way to the alps. It comes in at around £450 and thats with the standard lens. Thats not much more than the 350d. Dixons is at pretty much every major airport.

Im not amazingly in the know about cameras, but I will be using it to shoot snowboard sequences and as the 400d will shoot 3 fps and 27 jpegs, where the 350d will only do 14 jpegs.

Hope I have not added to much confusion to the already hard choice of choosing which camera:thumbs:

so they say, you have to add about 1+ stop (over expose) when taking pics in the snow, this way the snow will be nice and white. Yet to try this myself so can't say anymore about it

She has a couple of digi compacts and is a keen photographer but the course she wants to do requires an SLR.

Think we might go with the canon.

You know it makes sense :D I hope to get a speedlite for mine when on holiday, will see how much i will save on a lens too, want a prime lens and maybe a telephoto too.

Here is my little baby with battery grip

Go with Canon or Nikon.

I've got the Canon 350D and think it's fantastic, the 400D has recently come out but there's no major improvements over the 350D really. The 350D's should come down in price a little.

If you want to save some money, the Nikon D50 is also good.

Jessops DSLR prices are actually VERY good, but if you do find cheaper they will price match, and I'd much rather buy from them than over the internet for something like this.

You might want to look into just getting the camera with the standard kit lens and look on ebay for second hand sigma or tamron lenses. After the 18-55 standard zoom, you'll probably be wanting a longer telephoto lens. The 70-300 lens' are cheap enough and a huge range taking into account the crop factor on DSLR's.

This is also a good idea, this is how i got my battery grip. But be carefull with the sigma lens as the older ones that were for the film based Eos will not work on the DSLR, some might so I am told but most will not(aperture will not function), not sure if this is the same for Tamron.

The 400D has seen some criticism due to the fact the sensor is no bigger but they've crammed more MP's on to it. Leading to poorer quality.

Not read a review about the 400D yet, but what you say does make sense tho

I got the 350D too its a great camera, If I wanted to be picky though, Im not a great fan of CMOS chips even though they have come along way.. If I could of afforded the Nikon (or could justify spending that much on a stills) I would of gone for the Nikon D70 as it has a CCD...

But 350D is excellent...especially this side of £500, I got no plans to upgrade mine yet seems to have stood the test of time since i bought it!

Si
