Ric
Hi Guys just a quick question Basically should i be worried of the following situation when the cars been running a while and i turn it off and restart it, the Red oil light (which im assuming is pressure and orange is level) it goes off pretty much instantly In the morning, or when the car is cold it stays on for around a second once the car is turned over and fires up it then goes off, it has never come on any other time. Is this somthing which i should be worried about, and/or where is the oil pump located on the 2jz-gte? is more than likely the cause. tDR
No nothing to worry about on a cold car, just so long as it doesn't go off then flicker back on again. The oil when cold is thicker and takes a while (that second!) to get up to pressure when the oil pump starts to pump it round the engine. To reduce this time, you can use a thinner cold start viscosity rated oil in the winter. For example, a 0W 40 rated oil is thinner on a cold start than a 10w 40 oil so gets around the engine quicker but both are the same viscosity when warm. Cheers, Brian. tDR
Should be fine then Ric as Toyota spec 10W 30 for the Supra. No need to worry! If you're really interested in keeping an eye on your oil pressure, best to fit an oil pressure gauge. The std indicator will only light up when it's too late (typically manufacturers set this to 10psi or lower via the oil pressure switch on the engine) and you've done damage to big ends etc. Cheers, Brian. Ric
ok if i was to fit the gauge, what readings would i be looking for?
tDR
As a rough rule of thumb, I'd expect above 60psi when cold and around 30psi when warm / after boosting. Cheers, Brian.
