Rayman
Its on a merc sprinter van, one garage we took it to MOT failed it on this an another garage said they should have a bit of play. Was just wondering what the truth is, i get the impression they shouldn't have any play in them but dont actually know anything technical about this kinda stuff? Kranz
No they shouldn't. They should be tight, and any play (i.e. ball moving in the socket) will cause the steering, suspension & brakes to move a bit, leading to less control. The movement will also cause the ball joint to wear faster.
absz
the merc sprinters and the volkswagen vans do have slight play in them. which is deemed as acceptble:) i,m sure there was a article about it on the mot testers guide a few years back.
