Jim_1979
Sounds like you've possibly got a replacement gasket for the 1st cat. The gaskets I have are silver and shaped like the exhaust flanges, with holes in for the bolts. Although you may have bought replacement gaskets for the original exhaust (no idea what it's like). In which case they are wrong. well I did order the parts which were on the exploded diagram of the exhaust system (from the toyota parts program thing). In the pictures, they all look like rings. 3 of 17451 What you described was what I was expecting, but they look like what they look like in the picture I've got. Also, the garage which got them for me didn't seem to think they were the wrong part? Possibly these are the stock toyota gaskets??
matt k
Another quick question..... The cat closest to the engine seemed to have some sort of sensor plugged into it? I assume (havn't looked), that the decat will have the same space for the sensor?? Thanks!! Sounds like the O2 (lambda) sensor and the decat should have a flange for it to go back in. Steviekid
Sounds like the O2 (lambda) sensor and the decat should have a flange for it to go back in. The O2 sensor in the J-spec goes into the exhaust manifold before the first cat. The sensor in the first cat is just a temperature sensor that isn't needed anymore with decats. Bob
well I did order the parts which were on the exploded diagram of the exhaust system (from the toyota parts program thing). Also, the garage which got them for me didn't seem to think they were the wrong part? Possibly these are the stock toyota gaskets?? Yup, sounds like stock gaskets then mate. You need the aftermarket gaskets, unfortunately. 2 of them in total, and a tube of Firegum or similar exhaust sealant for the 1st cat. As I mentioned, Chris Wilson does the proper Trust gaskets. iirc they're about £8.50 each. Ask him nicely, he may throw in some bolts as well
Jim_1979
I'll see how I go with the toyota ones and firegum. If I can get the to stay in place when I put the exhaust together, it looks like they'll be fine.
Jim_1979
Well I gave up on the cat closest to the engine! Couldn't get it off at all!!?!..... Put the exhaust on with that cat still in place. Not noticed any performace difference than before and it doesn't hit fuel cut etc either. I take it this is the norm? I'll be taking it to an exhaust place this week to get that cat off!
Steviekid
I take it this is the norm? Yeah, the first cat is very restrictive. I got my studs out ok but one started going in slightly off thread when I put the decat in and it was a bastard to get it running straight again. Jim_1979
it's a twat of a job to do!! If I knew how much hassle I would have happily paid someone/a garage to do it!
Jim_1979
Also, exhausts sound weird on an automatic car!
Steviekid
If you lived a bit further West I could have given you a hand! I've spend half the day trying to get my bloody gauges to light up again.
Jim_1979
took it to an exhaust place today. They got two of the bolts out from the cat, but not one. They soaked it in wd40 today and are going to try again tomorrow!
