michael
I am as much to blame with my comments and I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to Micheal for the comments I directed at you, they were uncalled for. You are entitled to you view as much as I am. No offence taken / remembered - these things can get heated and if my comments caused this then I apologise too. As always I shall be joining my friends in church this Sunday to celebrate Remembrace Sunday and wearing my poppy with pride. I won't be in church but that doesn't mean I won't be giving the whole thing some thought.
Jake
I for one am very proud of what our armed forces have achieved since 1939 and that my grandparents fought in WW2. I would gladly contribute to any remembrance fund that helps those who lost their health or life defending our freedom. However, I don't like being told what I should and shouldn't contribute to, or what I should be grateful for, or the self-canonisation of people for their career choice. Frankly I don't believe anyone that says they joined the forces or the Fire Service for the good of other people. I know they do good but let's be honest - you joined for yourself, right? At least, the guys I know did. Because they thought it would be cool or fun or interesting or macho or secure or whatever.
Kittyclaws
Can people in the forces take out death in service and life insurance policies? I have both and the risks to me are minimal, it seems like a no-brainer if your life is actually at threat and you care about those who could be left behind. Not an attack, simply curious. Yeah, there are people who will provide cover. Unless you look after the nukes on our Trident subs. They can't get any life insurance, I could play the part of the Ew-En here and arrange a peace keeping meeting on neutral ground. Combatants could come round for dinner and a few ales. If my wifes cooking doesnt kill you, you can then continue hostilities with your choice of the weapons I have to hand. Frozen kippers are quite dangerous, and I have a couple of large hard french loaves. Janes feather duster is deadly up to 20 yards, or you could flick each other with the contents of the cats litter tray. Probably the most sensible post Ive made yet. will she be wearing those jeans? the ones in the pic on another thread

dangerous brain
The government should have done more to help and should continue to do so... but they do not. This is my whole point and my distaste for some of your comments really. The government should do more or in the minimum be a bit more sympathetic to the plight of families devastated by events in the case of serious injuries or death in action. They don't help and that leaves people no-where else to turn. Maybe a newer charity should be set up. I'm not asking anyone to unvoluntarily contribute to a charity or suggesting that anyone should feel compelled to contribute either. Suggesting that these people should fend for themselves is as distastefull a comment to me as suggesting that the homeless should sort their act out and move into a house and get a job etc etc. Can people in the forces take out death in service and life insurance policies? I have both and the risks to me are minimal, it seems like a no-brainer if your life is actually at threat and you care about those who could be left behind. Not an attack, simply curious. Some can some can't. I'll be fair here the government will pay the difference between what would be a similar job in civvy street (say you are an engineer or a policeman the rate you would be charged as one of them) and a servicemans. Problem is its not all that advertised. RAF pilots often can't get insurance for instance but an admin clerk would have no bother etc.
