'Silent' fans for PCs. Any good?

We keep our PC in the lounge and TBH it's so bloody loud that we end up turning the TV right up to 11 when they are both on.

I've heard of silent fans and would like to know if they are silent and what pitfalls they might have?

Cheers.

Watercooling is very quiet but potentially messy :)

Cooling can depend on lots of things. A poorly designed case will cause your system to run hotter than it should, which causes your fans to try harder than they should.

The Nexus silent fan is ok but the Akasa AK-183-L2B Ultra Quiet 120mm Fan is better still.

I'd go for Akasa, 18db's is a whisper. The "Silent" fans are 22db in their 120mm flavour.

Which fan is noisy though?

Power supply, CPU, possibly a case fan and graphics card fan too.

A larger slower RPM fan is quieter.

I've got an Antec sonata II case which is supposed to be quiet... not with PSU, CPU, Graphics, and two case fans though :D

A mate of mine used to run a peltier on his CPU back in the days where loads of people were getting the 300MHz Celeron's to run at 500MHz easily. He had a second PSU mounted that just ran the peltier and motherboard. I remember he used to get down to -4c. -25c is ridiculous. :D

Peltiers were brilliant back then but these days you'd need a mahoosive one to dissipate enough heat.

You could get a fan controller, it allows you to lower the voltages of the fans to allow them to spin slower and in return less noisy.

The nosier fans tend to be g card and cpu.

Silent fans are good if you don't do overclocking, the downside is they are quite large. Make sure you check your motherboard for compatibility.

Buying this one today instead:

The Ninja is HUGH. looks like a tight fit in the case and against the PSU, but i'm sure its designed so it doenst interfear.

+ its instock and a tad cheaper and i like the idea of 4 way mounting (oh er baby).
