Heavy and creaking clutch

Hi,

I asked this in Supra Chat, but then realised it's the wrong place. Doh!

I've just been to view an N/A '97 Supra. In general, it looked and drove fine - however, there was one issue.

The clutch was pretty heavy - enough so that when I first got into the car and put my foot on it, I thought I'd mistakenly put my foot on the brake. It also made a clear creaking sound as I pushed it in. Years ago I had a TT Supra and I don't remember the clutch being heavy on that.

My 911 previously had a heavy clutch and that meant it was pretty old. I had it replaced in May of this year and now it is sooooo light.

So - does this simply mean the car needs a new clutch - or could it be a sign of something else? And why the creaking (wasn't from the pedals I don't think - sounded like it came from under the car).

Assuming it means it needs a new clutch - what would the cost of having a clutch fitted be (at a reputable indpendent, not a Toyota garage).

I liked the car - but don't want to buy a problem. If it just needs a new clutch, then I would still proceed - but only if the price reflected the fact that it needs one.

Dave

Dave i have a 98 NA and am in surrey if you want another pedal to press and compare?

Thanks. I'm actually going back to see it again with the g/f tonight - so depending where you are in Surrey it might not be possible (I'm Camberley, the Supra is Basingstoke). It's heavy enough that I'm sure it needs something (and it shouldn't make a creaking noise anyway!) - I'm just a little worried it might be more than just a replacement. Plus - I'm obviously a bit reluctant to buy a car and immediately have to replace the clutch unless I can knock that much off the cost of the car.

The clutch should not feel heavy, if it is then its either got an uprated one or there's a fault. I can;t see an NA having an uprated clutch - at least not one thats going to be significantly heavier than stock.

Stock clutches and flywheels (usually those thave ot be replaced too) are around £450 for the TT, I imagine the NA is similar. Install just needs the gearbox out so not a major job, I think I was charged 3 hours the last time.

Do you know the name of the seller, might well be someone from here?

Well, I hope it's nothing too serious 'cos I just bought a 97 NA supra. Collect it tomorrow - agreed £200 off the price.

I drove a different car back there this evening, and the clutch on my g/f's Ka is heavier than the new one in the Porsche, so although the Supra one is still heavy (and creaks) - it didn't feel quite so bad.

I always like to get a car serviced after I've bought it so I'll get it investigated then.

He was in his 40s. A little over weight. Not the prettiest guy in the world.

I would be surprised if it is him. He says he has owned the car for 5 years - I've not checked the log book yet (I told him I'd check the paperwork tomorrow before handing the cash over) - but if he's really had the car that long then I assume it is a private sale (which it is supposed to be).

Good. One of the main reasons I'm happy the sale is going through - I was beginning to browse the TT ads. If the car didn't look look, I'm pretty sure I would have started looking at TTs and that's just NOT sensible!

On the contrary, it's very sensible. In a year or so you'll be looking to sell on your N/A to buy a TT, wishing you'd bought one in the 1st place.

Also, TT's seem to be around half the price to insure :)

Cheers,

Brian.

Thanks - definitely not the same person.

If I didn't have the 911, I would certainly have bought the TT. But the Supra is supposed to be my economical daily runaround!

A TT would be fun, but I have trouble justifying a TT and the 911 (even to myself!) and I don't think I would need a fun second car - and I don't want to sell the 911.

I'd want a fairly late one - and if I was spending that sort of money I think I probably would sell the 911, then combine the amount and go for a TT 911. Maybe in the future I'll go for both!
