michael
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6082690.stm If you own a car that uses more fuel that want to charge you more for parking it.... surely it should be less to encourage people to leave them parked and use 'green' transport instead. In my opinion one piece of tarmac should cost as much as all the others, isn't this kind of thing how genocide starts?
Nick
"Climate change is the single greatest challenge facing the world today," said council leader Serge Lourie. That should be "Climate change is the biggest single excuse for the government to extort money from the motorist"
Voo51
That is so unfair!!!
Pete
It's all right Michael, Londeners can afford it.
mattanna
Worst of all it says on another report that the chancellor is planning to increase excise duty on high fuel use cars again, we may all get away with it as our c02 from manufacture is unknown, but we pay more by buying fuel
tbourner
That's not too bad, it's all to stop people buying those cars, and if when the 3 year change comes around people say to themselves "I'll buy a Prius this time instead of a Porsche Cayenne" then they're solving part of the polution problem aren't they? And how much faster is a Cayenne than a Prius in London? Obviously there will be people suffering, like the car enthusiasts who don't just buy a car for transport. I've found it's those bloody Supra owners are the worst!
Pete
I'm pretty sure it's just another hair brained idea which the media have jumped on to cause outrage. I expect the council will have hundreds of complaints leading them to decide that maybe it wasn't such a good idea after all. Here's hoping. Max Headroom
As Nick said its just another excuse to extort money from the motorist. How many times do you see a full bus as its chugging around the place belching out all those fumes!!
JohnA
I agree with the principle behind the idea, but the implementation does look like yet another money-grabbing excersice. They could have kept 1200cc-1600cc the same, increase over 1600cc on a sliding-scale, and drastically DECREASE everything below 1200cc. If they were to verify that the expected revenue for next year with the new regime would be the same as the old, then it could pass as an environmental move. A couple of years down the line they could easily readjust the scales, depending on people's new buying habits. But no, they want more money right NOW! Using environmental arguments in this way greatly devalues them, same as the abuse of 'safety' cameras. Shame...
Nick
The environmental justification is a crock. The motorist is an easy target for tax, and they can play the environment card to justify it to the gullible public. What starts off as an increased parking and congestion charge in London for the rich, will soon be expanded to other cars, towns and cities. Only then will the majority complain, and then it's too late.
hob
The people in the country are way too soft Try this in France/American anywhere else and there would be riots, we jsut ask for more lube to be used on the shafting
Supragal
Problem is they know people will pay it. One day they will go to far though.
hob
One day they will go to far though. But the majority of people unfortunatly are the ones that this never applies to, they just sit back and await the giro each week and most of the other smarter top end people have left the country allready.
