Whitesupraboy2
A light-tight wooden box has three switches on the outside that control three light bulbs on the inside. When the box is closed you can turn the switches on or off but when you open the box how can you tell which switch controls each bulb without touching the switches? 2nd puzzle below: How few times can you weigh 9 identical cookies on a balance scale to find the one with a gold ring inside? Ian W
so the light will stay on/off when you open the box but you can only move the switch when it's closed? surely it's a simple process of elimination?
Max Headroom
Easy turn on switch 1, then open box and whichever is warmer than the other two is operated by that switch, repeat with switch 2 and then whatever is left is switch
Jake
With box closed change the position of the first switch. Open the box and see if/which light is illuminated. Rinse and repeat
Whitesupraboy2
should of been clearer you can only open the box once!

Ian W
you flick two switches. turn one off after a while then open the box. the light that is on is the first one, warm one (which was on but now off is the second) and the third will be off and cold. voila

Ian W
put one on to warm it up, then switch off. turn another on and open the box. yes?
Ian W
How will that tell you anything about the third one? three switches, three bulbs. the switch you leave on will have a lit bulb, the switch you had on will be warm and thus the third and last switch will be cold and off?
