garetheves
An odd request on a car forum but ive seen worse threads. Basically me and the missus went travelling on 2004 and while we were away i made a website that we could update each week with what we had done. Basically an on-line diary, so day by day account. Thought it was a better way than a generic email to everyone i know. That way people who were interested could look and those that werent didnt etc. Anyway, went down a success and we loved filling the thing in, it became something to look forward to each week. What im after is taking the text from that page, plus 1 or 20 of our photos, a map of our routes and a nice intro etc and turn it into a book for my Finace for xmas. We did talk about this ages ago but havent done anything yet and thought it would be something nice to look back on in years to come. Anyone know how i would go about doing this. Obviously i need a printers to actually make the book, but would i need a publisher as im not planning of making more than say 4-5 books (2 for us and the rest for family etc) and certainly not going to be selling any. Anyone ever written a book before and could advise me on the stages involved? Obviously ive got all the text and could have the photos ready in a week or so when ive picked some out. Cheers. Charlotte
What an amazingly lovely idea. I can't see why you'd need a publisher if it's only for close family etc.

Charlotte
Cheers Charlotte. I didnt think id need a publisher but must admit a few people i spoke to at work said i probably would. I really don't see why. After all publishing is the act of making information available for public view/sale. But in small amounts of books etc usually the author is the publishing too. Charlotte
So id really only need someone to design it (maybe myself if i can pull my finger out) and a decent printers? Give it a whirl. I would. Just think about feelings/things that you loved the most about the holiday, before and after it. I'm assuming it was a kind of life changing thing if you did your diaries and are still thinking about it. I suppose it's having the time to do it, but I'm sure you'd be happier in the long run if you knocked something up. I'm sure some of the more artistic guys on here would do some messing up for you though.
GeordieSteve
No publisher needed. I've got a few mates who are publishers and can't see them doing 4/5 books. Printer should do you fine
CJ
Due to the short run length, you wont need a lithogrphic printer but a digital printer who can produce runs of 1 upwards. Look in the YP for Digital printing and see what that comes up with. Most of these will have an in house esign facility too and can advise you on layout and finishing options as well as paper weight and stock. If you get to speak to them, find out what machines they are thinking of running it on and then let me know and I can then tell you if they are competent or a Jimmy Joke Shop HTH

So some printers have the designers in house to help me design the thing. Im glad of that because i havent got an artistic design in my body. So all id have to do is take the text and the pictures to them and go through how i would like it to look and they would do the rest?? Thats cool. Cheers for the help guys.
