MarkTheBoy
Evening all, This weekend me and a friend are off to sunny Wales for three days for a survival in the wild weekend with an ex-army commando type dude. Just wondered if there was anyone on here who'd done anything similar and could offer any advice on anything I might have forgotten or might need. It involves quite a bit of hiking and camping in the wild so I don't wanna go unprepared. Any tips?
RedM
Have your butler go ahead and set up the tents and cook for you.
ChrisSZ
wear thin nylon socks with nice thick woolen ones over the top - helps prevent blisters. Also, get some thick wolly tights - lovely and warm - honest!! Bin liners are always useful - as are sailors or storm matches

MarkTheBoy
What kit are you taking? Tent & sleeping mat or are you sleeping rough? We're gonna take a tent but have a bivvy just incase we're not allowed it. I hadn't thought about tights... thats not a bad idea that Got waterproof matches + stuff Ive not done a lot of hiking before, wasn't sure on the two pairs of socks thing, does that deffinitely make blisters less likely? MarkTheBoy
dont forget to take a torch! Well reminded.... spare batteries too I guess.
Guest mk47
yes definately and if your setting up a tent make sure you close the entrance because when i was at jae and didnt close the tent i had to evacuate the tent of swarms of earwigs, and slept with 1eye open! SupraAyf
Red M's got the right idea, but if you haven't got one of those butler types then: Lots of thin layers to retain your heat. Water bottles to keep the fluid levels constant. No chocolate as it gives you a sharp energy boost and then it can act as a depressive source. (Take energy breakfast bars instead) Waterproof kit. Grab some freezer bags (resealable airtight version); press your extra dried kit so it goes as small as you can get your clothes/underwear etc and place your clothes in the bags - don't allow them to expand. Then press all of the air out while the clothes are compact and seal to form a waterproof vacuum pack that saves on space and keeps your kit dry. No foot powder as it forms micro-balls in your socks and against your skin, causing the flesh to rub, blister and bleed. Thinsulate head gear and gloves. (Only cheap stuff but make sure your waterproof (and windproof jacket can protect your head too. Scarf to keep out draft, lipsel and face cream to prevent facial dryness and breaking of the skin when wet and in wind-blast conditions. Sleeping bag: 4 seasons for Wales at this time of the year - don't skimp on this or else your bollocks will freeze. Food: anything that you can mix and match in the same pan. It gets churned up inside so why bother being so fussy! Telephone for emergency comms and tell someone where you're going and what dates and times - Marines get lost all of the time mate so a relative needs to know where you are going too - just in case. Also, if you are inexperienced which clearly you are, then don't let your ex-commando take you in to some fecking shit hole. Wales can be really bad this time of year and some ex-forces suddenly pretend to be Special Forces and stretch the limits of their knowledge and experience - you get killed that way. If you're not happy then tell him to feck off! Cheers Mucka, Andrew P.S. Waterproof map pocket (use a freezer bag) and make sure he tells (and shows) you where you are all going on the map yeh! ChrisSZ
Chris, I take it you've done plenty of this before? Just a little bit:) Usually right up north (past the Scotish bit) and with only a very small baccy tin for kit, boiler suit and boots (+ whatever we could smuggle past the instructors LOL)

BTW - Tits on a fish... lol No problems mucka. Just remember, if you get lost or the wind and blasting rain is in your face then leave the commando and head south (compass needed) then down the hills where you'll normally find a warm pub; nice grub and real ale (and a camp site about 50m away! By the time that you've read this, your commando-mate will be following you!
