Faye
Your best bet is to ask Customs, however when I used to do that work (3 years ago) that was the advice that we gave out.

dangerous brain
The insurance will be the bit that is highly illegal. You should still be able to arrange cover for it without the other stuff if you speak tell the insurance company all the details. If not my advice get it put on a transporter cos you would be gutted if you either crashed it, someone crashed into you, or you got lifted lost your liscense and then couldnt drive it for a year. Jake
Yes you can legally drive a car from Customs to it's final destination but it must be covered by insurance. It's not an unusual sight around here to see Jap cars being driven with no number plates and still with the auction marking on the windows. You mustn't tow an automatic car unless you have removed the prop shaft first. Otherwise you will ruin the gearbox in a very short time. Paul Laing
I'd have it transported up mate, no risks then about crashing it and not getting a penny back. The insurance might not insure you till it's registered etc too. How much would it cost though to transport it? Paul
Keith C
You *will* damage the auto box if you attempt to tow it any real distance, or above a certain speed. IIRC you're ok to tow for up to 30 miles - but at no more than 30mph. Either get it transportered, or insure it based on the VIN - there are insurance companies that will do this, although you may have to phone around a bit. All you need to drive it home is a) Proof you've just picked it up, and where you're taking it to (no sneaky detours to Southampton to show a mate for example) b) Insurance for the time you're driving it home. You don't need tax or MoT.

dangerous brain
For the cost of a couple of phone calls its gotta be worth opening the yellow pages and getting a quote from a couple of local recovery firms.
Jurgen-Jm-Imports
just kidding a will try it, but if too expensive a will have to drive it back, unless anyone in the north east wants to borrow me a car trailer.

Jake
I checked the DVLA website and it seems like they don't want you drive it from the Port of Entry although they don't actually say it's illegal. Note the use of the phrase "To avoid difficulties". Rather vague huh? Why can't they just say whether it's legal or not? http://www.dft.gov.uk/stellent/groups/dft_roads/documents/page/dft_roads_506867-03.hcsp#P180_26795 UK law requires a vehicle to be licensed and registered for road use. To avoid difficulties, importers are advised by DVLA to transport rather than drive their vehicles from the port of entry to home or first destination and to keep them off the road until they have been properly licensed and registered. You must obtain insurance cover before you drive in the UK. This can be arranged prior to arrival through an UK insurance company or broker. The British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) should be able to provide you with information about insurance companies which provide the type of cover you will need. The BIBA can be contacted at: BIBA House, 14 Bevis Marks, London, EC3A 7NT, Tel: (0)20 7623 9043.

uncle kev
Are you buying from liverpool port auctions? i was going to buy from there and it does say in the terms and conditions that if you have proof that its booked in at a MOT or SVA testing place and you cant register it untill it has been MOT'd or SVA'd you can drive it to the test station. however there is a SVA site in the docks, so it looks dodgey thay your driving it all the way to newcastle. i enquired about driving one to rotherham and they strongly advised me not to . dont risk it. kev
