I just moved into a new house. Well I say a new house but its ages old. I've been marvelling at alot of crap in it. One bit that I took a particular notice in was the central heating thermosatat. I know I know WTF is this guy on about an aging thermostat for :) Well I've dismantled it in the interest of curiosity. Its a fantastic setup of coiled bimettalic springs and a mercury switch. WOW wee I guess you guys are saying.

 

Thing is it got me thinking a bit. The big assed V8 power houses in the states still use carburettors. Now thats old technology, WHY do they do that???

 

And heres a thing for the real tuners how would a supra fair with a carb???

Carbs are inferior in every way to fuel injection. You have all sorts of mechanical bodges with carbs to try and get the fueling and timing right under all conditions and even then it's not very good. Or you just program your ECU to get exactly the right fueling and timing all the time. Plus a turbo car with carbs is complex - you either put the carb before the turbo in which case you can't use an intercooler or a BOV, or after the turbo in which case you have to pressurise the fuel somehow with a special setup.

Ah but who needs that when you can use that position to take a buggering great bit supercharger from ??? Is it just fuel consumption would be an issue or are we talking the nasty detonation monster also??? Surely a carb is easier to tweak than a fully fudging fool the ecu piggy back machine??

Carbs also get out of settings over time, which means you are constantly having to reset them.

 

EFI gives absolutely spot on timing as well as feedback to combustion cycle which the ECU uses to tweak fuel injectors. Carbs are set and simply put in what they are set to, which means if they block or you suddenly get a boost spike you will running VERY lean.

Hmmm, in the same vein... could you super/turbo charge a throttle body system.. I know there isn't much point because it is positive boost or is there some other reason?

 

Yes you can. It would be no diferent to the set up on a supra now IE ..you still have an injector for each cylinder only difference would be a TB for each cylinder too. So one big TB for all or one small one for each can be done. Feck setting it up tho. Each TB has to be spot on.

A blow-through carb which you would need for a supercharger or turbo setup would cost you much more than a stand alone ECU I suspect.

Depending on what set up you go for they can work very very well . In therory , Take a 2jzgte, six correctly sized TB's would have a greater open orifice than the stock TB and therefore in thoery allow better flow. Now there is also the other side of the coin that says you now have 6 TB plates in the air path. Cost would be a limiting factor hence why toyota use one big TB and it's a hell of a lot easier to set up one TB. Be a good project tho. Track records have shown the work really well on NA aplications. Obviously the Fuel injecting side is still ECU controlled.

 

Edited: K14 sup reminded me. Best of speaking to someone who knows the engine. I'm not familiar with it.
