Electricians/plumbers ONLY: Electric shower question.

After using our electric shower we are getting a fishy smell from just outside the bathroom door, roughly above the meter, fuse box etc.

Having had a quick search on the net would I be right in thinking that this smell is a sign that something is overheating or burning?

There are no visible signs and we've only had the smell since the weekend. The shop below report nothing out of the ordinary either.

Cheers.

i was having the same problem it was the trip thats melting away in the fuse box with the load of the electric shower i had to do away with the 30amp trip and fit a separate fuse box with a 45amp trip to cure it.

So, baths until it's fixed then! :(

Call Landlord - let them worry about it.

Sit back and laugh as they get the bill for the rewire.

Done.;) :D

The meter and fuse box are situated in the shop downstairs. The shop people have smelt nothing.

The smell 'area' in our flat is not directly above the meter but it is very close to a large isolator switch thing situated on the wall in our bedroom. Directly through the wall is the shower.

We have had issues with this switch before so fingers crossed.

Grittish Bass are coming out to have a look tomorrow and until they've been and fixed it then it'll be baths (gas boiler heated) or au naturel!!!!

Oh, and cheers for texting me Mark. While it was mych appreciated it also freaked me out a little during my working day when I couldn't do a thing about it. Grrrr....

Could be a burn`t out or damaged power supply wire supplying the shower, from memory 2 types of cable can be used (6mm if the distance from consumer box to shower is less than 3 metres or 10mm if its more than 3 metres, 10 mm is dearer than 6mm so a few budget conscious "rogue leccies" choose the "correct type" ) How far away from the shower is the "fishy smell" ?

If its rented insist on immediate repairs as the smell may be toxic !

i installed a replacement electric shower this weekend...

9.5kw needs a 45amp fuse, 8.5kw can get away with a 40amp. (according to the paperwork we got with the shower)

I've say that you need it sorted pronto - the only thing that should smell is YOU (at least before you get in the shower)

Oh, and the cabling might not be in fantastic shape - if this is a new shower, chances are the power of the replacement shower are too high for the size of cabling used.
