There is a solution to this, A level chemistry has come in useful for once! The plastic part has to be made of something that can be charged, this is achieved by "electroless" plating. This involves bathing the plastic in a metalic chloride (the name illudes me, hey it was many years ago), this will leave a metalic coating behind. It is this coating that can then be electroplated. Its not as simple as ive decribed, iirc there is alot of prep work that has to go into preping the plastic for electroless plating such as pitting the plastic by bathing it in sulphic acid (i think).
