tbourner
Been thinking about getting a tattoo for a while, I've got a design and everything but need some more info. Firstly and most importantly, I keep getting mixed opinions on how much it hurts - cos I'm a woose (I nearly feinted when I had my BCG!!). They can use some spray or something? Does it do anything? I'm a needle-phobic so that won't help! Is it really a good idea or will I be laughed at for passing out? Are there any certificates or accreditations I should look out for? Any good tattoists around Portsmouth? How long does it take? Mine's the pic below, probably about 3 inches high by 1 inch wide. It'd be on my left arm near the shoulder. Shane
I have a tribal band around the top of my arm, that only really hurt when they got to the soft under arm flesh. 1 x 3 " reckon about 20 to 40 mins dependant on the person doing it. If you are scared of needles, just dont watch it being done. Anyhow its not like a long syringe style needle, most of the needle is out of sight. Make sure you have eaten before you go and take something like a mars bar with you to boost your sugar levels if you feel dodgy, during or afterwards. Cant advise on Portsmouth, but there is two really good places around here. There is a guy on the forum with most of his upper body covered, now that must have took ages. Good luck, show us the results after you have it done.
SupraAyf
Tattoos look shite when your skin starts to crease and get old. Just keep using the cream m8 and then you won't have to suffer the pain! Tattoos bring back a few good thoughts - like the one where the boys and I went on a stag weekend to Holland and we thoughtfully bought a new tattoo for the groom-to-be. It just so happened that we chose the wrong name for his bride-to-be:eyebrows: She was a bit of a possessive type and she certainly didn't like the fact that he was wearing a Dutch girls name on his arm. He was an ungrateful tw@t as it cost us 200 quid! That's gratitude for you!

michael
I've spent the last 10 years designing stuff for myself and then changing my mind, so far I'm just glad I haven't had any of them done properly
JustGav
There is a place in Salisbury that does some good work, missus and father-in-law got some done there... the work looks good... but I'm not a tatoo fan so I'm not much to go on really.. tbourner
Thanks, Shane, good advice! Tattoos look shite when your skin starts to crease and get old. I've thought about this, but lots of people have them so it's not like I'll be wierd or anything, just one of those people who got tattoos when they were younger! Plus the removal techniques are bound to get better. Im having another one for christmas, costing nealy £500 Bleedin' 'eck! How much do they cost per mm then? I've spent the last 10 years designing stuff for myself and then changing my mind, so far I'm just glad I haven't had any of them done properly Yeah this design's been on my desk for a while, always thought I'd do it eventually though, just the one and not too big. Might find out where my brother went, think it was Southampton though.

Jake
3" x 1" ? Isn't that rather small for the upper arm and might possibly look a bit ghey? No offence like, better to say now before you get it done. I've seen guys with small tatts that look out of place and always thought "I bet he regrets that"

Arm tats need to be big. non visable smaller tattoos work on some people.

Possibly, not really sure how big it'll be on my arm. I'll see when we come to it and see what we reckon at the time. That was just a guesstimate. Golddigga
On the pain front all I can say is that the more flesh there the better. The one I had done on my back was Ok until the edge of the shoulder blades and thats when it hurt a bit! However, that said I sat there reading a book so it couldn't have been that bad:p
Jake
There's a really good tattooist in Pompey now Trev. I forget his name ATM but I believe he's won awards in the states and stuff. I'll do a seach for his details in a mo mate.

michael
If I had the money, and could get a booking, I'd love to get my current favourite design done by Kat Von D http://www.katvond.net/ Such attention to detail and she makes things look like they are supposed to rather than being grotesque attempts. Oh and she's hot. I want to get a mix of black / grey and UV reactive inks, seems to be impossible to find someone willing to do this with a bit of skill

mattanna
If it is your first they all hurt the same, not excruciating but not exactly pleasant.Make sure tattooist uses sterilising equipment and new needles and also ask to look at some of his/her work, you do not really see any needles even though they are used, if getting it done get it a reasonable size seems a shame to go through it to be too small good luck
