ECU questions..

Ok, im BPU apart from ive no boost controller. i was looking into an apexi or a blitz EBC. new between about 300 - 400 quid.

question is if i got a new ECU, say E manage, would this then be able to control my boost and relieve the need of an EBC? there not far off the price mark and it would be ready for when my stock tubbies go pop and i need a single..

im running around 1 bar at the moment. no controller at all so its up and down a little with the temp changes.

Simon, thanks for the reply. i didnt realise that. just looked at the price of the AEM now, 1200 quid.

so on a single running a piggy back ECU i would still require a boost controller of some sort, correct? the piggy back ECU would then just control ignition & fueling? are there any good links for reading up on ECU's?

Turbofit does the AEM for £950;)

Generally yes. I'd use a EBC with even a full replacement ECU.

1. You can turn it off and go back to stock boost (say when it's wet).

2. You can change on the fly...no messing about with laptops. (Your mappable ECU will be mapped for the max boost you can/will run.)

3. An EBC usually has some useful information on it...viewable on the move.

I've never seen the point of adjusting boost. Just set it at the level the car's mapped and set up for. Your right foot is the thing that controls how much power to put down. I never changed mine on the fly when I had one, my Motec ECU looks after it now, and has much more control over boost than even the best EBC as it knows what your speed. rpm, gear and anything else is and can adjust boost accordingly.

I can. :)

Most people like to run less power in the winter...as it's just safer...also, if you hand your car over for a service, you can turn it all off to stop them using it! (lets face it we know they do it) And not everyone uses a specialist.

I would not have a car mapped by anyone who password protects it, at the end of the day you paid for it so should have access to it.

:D

Its a difficult one. For ECU's with this facility we do as a rule, unless the customer asks us to unlock it. If we do unlock it you do void any and all warentee with the mapping, and engine build if we have done one.

Its such a pain in the ass area, but if we dont take precautions then it will end up putting us bust because of people who think they know better than a mapper of 25 years, cos his mate said it'll take a bit more boost! LOL

That's fair enough Martin. It's down to the owner to check the datalogs from the mapping session and make sure they are happy with them before leaving.

For people in "the know" about such things, we try to work as closly as we can with them so they understand what is being done and why, adn that they are happy.

With the AEM you can have a switch on the dash for two boost settings.. you can also have switch to change maps (race or rd fuel)

And you need a decent mapper:)

With the Motec too you can have a rotary switch with multiple boost settings if you want, I just don't know why you'd bother. Apart from if you wanted a different map for race fuel.
