xell
As the title suggests i'm getting a fair bit of smoke out of the exhaust when I start the car in the mornings. This clears up when the engine warms up. Should I worry or not??
Kranz
Its the valve stem seals. They crack as they get old. If you can live with it, its no major issue. If you can't live with it there's a procedure posted on here for changing them using rope... no kidding! Just search the archives fo valve stem seal replacement. wkdtime
Blown Valve Stem seals would cause blue smoke on startup and drop in oil levels over time depending on how bad they are worn and the condition of the valve guides.

xell
Thanks guy's so is the valve stem seals a big prblem then or will it be ok??
Guest gzaerojon
AFAIK they will only be a problem on cold start up, but when the engine warms up, the rubber seals slightly shrink making them seal better. is there any other times when it smokes? like hard acceleration or de acceleration? Kranz
is there any other times when it smokes? like hard acceleration or de acceleration? Don't think so Jon. During running the oil doesn't puddle in the head which causes the start up smoke. The valves also seal in the guides better when hot, the stem seals soften up a bit and the positive inlet & exhaust pressures keep the oil out. xell
It only does it when the engines cold. i've only had the car 3 weeks so I can take it back and get the delaers I got it from to replace them

Jake
i've only had the car 3 weeks so I can take it back and get the delaers I got it from to replace them Can you let us know how that goes with the dealer? I hope they don't try to squirm out of it but I suspect they will. Good luck mate.
Kranz
Get them to do it without taking the head off too, as 'breaking the seal' of the factory built engine can be a can of worms if not done properly. They won't do anything else such as clean up the ports & valves and re-grind the valves while they're in there so there's no point taking the head off. Guest gzaerojon
also it might be worth removing the cam cover an blobbing on some black paint on the heads of the cam pully bolts, then you can check they have been undone they might just shove thick oil in the car to try to get rid of the smoke just a far fetched idea

If it's anything like most standard dealer warranties this'll come under wear and tear or some bollocks. I hope not for your sake.
