Help me please :(

Supragal

Recommended Posts

Having a pretty bad spell at the moment and it just got worse.

I got a rover to replace the supra, and now the rovers head gaskets gone. So I've got a volvo to replace the rover only now it won't start!

So basically I've got 3 cars and I can't use any of them. Its my last day at work tomorrow so I really need to be there.

It's a Volvo V70 on a P plate 1997.

Got it on Monday and suprise suprise it's f*cked already. It's been fine up until this evening. Drove it home, went out about 10 mins later to take the dogs out and it won't start. Turns over just will not fire.

Checked all the fuses- fine

Checked fuel, thats fine

Looks as though the coil isn't firing does anyone know what might cause this or what to check next?

Please?

Yeah I thought that too but we removed all associated fuses and it made no odds.

Gave in and called the aa. £70 later and he's gone, he can't fix it so that was money well spent then.

He thinks it's the crank shaft sensor, does that sound likely? Because what's going to happen now is that we will replace that at 4 million pounds for the part and it won't be that at all. But if I get it recovered to Volvo and they plug it in, any money it will be that but it will cost me 8 million pounds instead.

from another forum

this type car has an immobilizer system.which has a chip in the key that must be recognizedby the immobilizer control unit before it will start.there could be a problem with the key, antenna ring (this is around the ignition lock and reads the keys chip)or a bad control unit.most problems are key or antenna ring.when it does this I would try another key and see if that one works.

and

someone had the same problem...the dealership had to replace a faulty sensor that caused the car to block it from being able to start.....

just googled volvo v70 wont start - it seems they can be a bitch for this

Yeah I think I will have to spend another £60 on a taxi. Ideal when you don't have an income. Thats over £3000 in one week on one poxy car then. I can't miss my last day, at the very least I need to get my data off my laptop!!!

No, not ideal, but not worth spending 1000s more on something you dont know will fix it, do the tests when you have time to follow them through logically, and spend money that will rectify it, not on guesses!

And then go shoot the person that advises you what cars to buy, and what garages to use!

Does this point to the cam sensor and is there anyway of checking it or can anyone suggest anything else short of the dreaded dealer?

Mate,

Exactly the same happened to my 855 the other week.

That turned out to be the CAM Sensor.

I had the AA transport mine to VT who sorted it the next day.

I was advised to reprogram the alarm / immobilser as that can sometimes cause a similar problem??????????????????????????????????????????? ????

the last bit is interesting

you're joking aren't you? Supra is no fault of it's own and volvos are meant to be bullet proof! 2 owners from new FSH, checked everything possible in a private 2nd hand sale what more can I do? I always gets stitched up on buying cars. I'm walking from now on.

TBF the rovers done 25k with me now with only very little problems, and it is over 100k now so I knew it's time was up :)

Rosie, I'm guessing you're at work now... But one quick thing that will help pin point where the problem is; was the immobiliser light on the dash (that normally flashes slowly to show the alarm/immobiliser is on when the car is locked) flashing very fast when you put the key in and turned it to the Ign setting (before the crank setting)?

If it was then its the immobiliser that has disabled the vehicle. It should flash fast for a minute then start to flash a code that shows what the problem is.

If it wasn't then its a mechanical/electrical fault. An electrical fault such as cam/crank sensor should cause the check engine light to come on & there should be a disgnostic code that can be checked.

Hmm, there is no alarm/imb light that I've found so far lol

Oh yes I am at work right now.

Having read up on those forums it does seem that the crank shaft senser is a likely candidate. So we have ordered one of those which will be in later today. If it's not that we will have to get it recovered to Volvo and get them to read the fault codes.

It seems you can't read the codes without an actual reader not like the lovely Supra!

Does anyone know anything about imobilisers? This still isn't running and we've taken it to the local Volvo specalist and they are foxed too.

I don't know how to find out if it is the immobiliser, there are no fault codes stored apparently the immobiliser stores it's own but they don't have the tool to read that.

There must be a way to bypass it so that we can at least eliminate it?

Surely if you fit an aftermarket one to a Volvo you have to remove the stock one?

Asked on the vovlo forums but they dont' know either so thought it might be worth a more specific ask here about immoblisers in general.

*sigh* meant to go away this weekend, looking more and more likely we're not going to have the car now. And I had to go to an interview today in the head-gasket-blown rover. Nice.
