Racing a supra

It's already reg friendly, under the floor, but sadly well back, it will easily do a 20 minutr race, unless the engine is absolutely drinking fuel for some reason. No firewall issues. Plastic tank, well protected and safe.

Is it worth (possible) filling it with foam to prevent the fuel sloshing about with potential starvation problems???

If it helps my near standard car uses 3/4 tank for 25 laps of the full Bruntingthorpe aerodrome- easily 90% of the time at WOT. Next time I go I'll reset the trip from full to light on.

Afternoon all, I'm here to gauge interest really. I'm thinking about building a new race car and I've got a hankering to use a Supra. It's RWD, has decent power and I like the look of them!

I'm talking about proper UK Circuit racing, rather than other motorsport such as drag racing or drifting. As far as I can tell (so far) there doesn't seem to be anyone doing this with the Supra.

What I'm interested in finding out, is the interest this may generate from the Supra community. If there is plentry of interest then that improves my chances of gaining sponsorship from companies linked to the Supra.

Is anyone aware of anyone currently circuit racing a Supra?

Are there any companies I'd be wise to speak to who may have had some experience or may be interested in offering support?

This won't be the first race car I've built and I have a friend who has built some pretty decent Supra engines and competed at TOTB - in fact he kind of got me thinking about this!

I've competed for a number of years in motorsport and I'm a professional motorsport instructor - so I know what I'm doing on the track.

Just chuck in thoughts, comments, etc - I really want to know what the Supra community thinks to this idea, and if anyone has already had a go.

Cheers all

Tony

do it Tony!

Actually, there is one thing that someone local could do for me - I need to have aclos eup look at a Supra - Is there anyone local that woudl eb willing to let me look at their car (nothign major - just under bonnet, boot, etc) and take me out for a quick run so I can get a sense of what the car feels like on the road (I'm quite use to assesing a car feel and performancefrom the passenger seat).

I'm not a burglar or anything - Ian can vouch for me as we have met.

I must admit that I need a bit more convincing at the moment, I've also been looking at other quick RWD coupes and the Mazda RX7 is edging towards the top of the list due to it's lighter weight - although its' lower power as standard and the wankel engine scares me! I at least understand how the Supra's works!

Good luck trying to find reliable people to rebuild a rotary engine for you, especially up north!

Seriously, Supra's the only choice! :D

What are the regs around the engine/aspiration in the series you're looking at?

Can you swap engines? ie a 3S-GTE into a Supra/RX-7?

That's great if you are TOMs with a lot of money & rescources, but I get the impression sticking a 3SGTE into a Supra (and mounting it to take the advantage) is more difficult than it looks on paper.

Pip Gardener at WGT Developmenst up the road from me is a rotary engined expert. My stock RX-7 was quicker round Oulton and Donington than my stock TT Supra and my slightly modded R33 GTS Skyline, as a guide. I'd buy another, but turbo rotaries on UK fuel, with UK noise limits.... Hmmmm....! N/A rotaries are superbly reliable, but silencing one, without killing power is all but impossible, and the turbo ones need a lot of octane to give the big numbers.

That is an interesting point. I'd (perhaps misguidely) thought the Rotary's would be a quieter engine.

For racing I have to be able to silence the car properly and it'll need to be around 100-103 db - circuit limit is usually 105db but that may drop in the future.

Cars must also use pump fuel - with a decent additive such as Millers. Now I'm not after a 500bhp rotary - but is octane an issue even with a lower power motor on the rotary?

Engine swaps (for the chap that asked) are limited to engines from the same manufacture - so no chance of a supra motor in an RX7 - although I suspect that would kill a lot of the RX7's light weight and balance benefits anyway.

I had a go in a RX7 FD at the weekend. Engine was played with, and it had some nice brakes, suspension and comp tyres. It was a rocket go kart, *huge* fun.

Is there more than one type of Millers? I tried the off the shelf stuff and it was 100% snake oil, complete waste of money.

Millers do a lot of products, all of them very good. For several years I've used their octane booster in the engine of my race car (have to due to the ignition advance and a compresion ration of 11.1 - 1) Without it the car knocks, and would rapidly burn up a piston. As it's and old car without an ECU I have to set the ignition up on the RR and then it is fixed. I gain top end power thanks to the extra advance the Millers allows.

Tony, the 3S-GTE is the MR2 Turbo's engine. It's a 4Pot...if it makes the Supra lighter and gives better weight distribution then you could be onto a winner....ditch the heavy 2JZ.

Thinking about it this means you could buy a cheaper NA...sell the block and buy a 3S-GTE and mate that to either the NA's 5 Speed or the 6-speed (not sure if that's possible at time of writing)....

But like I say it depends how far you want to go...

Maybe too ambitious for my time scales. I don't want to spend a year working on a car and missing a seasons racing. I like being out there, wheel to wheel.

this thread sounds good, so what series are you planning to race in, the 3sgte is a good options for lighter weight, you can mount the engine far back to get better weight proportion for the car, plus if there are any engine size limits its a 2.0 :)

In the Super GT supra's they seem to be using the lexus v8 now as they used to use the 503e engine as much as i can remember basically the same as the 3sgte 2.0 turbo

the top secret car 3sgte
