Odd Sound on hard acceleration

Guys,

I need to pick your brains. I’m getting a strange high pitched sound on hard acceleration. It comes in as the turbo’s spin up, it sounds like someone letting the air out of a balloon by pulling the neck tight. If you back off the throttle, it stops. It’s only started happening since I changed the cams. Any ideas???

The whistle type induction sound on BPU, I can only describe as sounding like an electric drill. Atleast for mine. :) Dunno of any other whistle type sound though!

Yep I have that sound, that's a nice background sound. this one is far more in your face....

Thanks for your help though...

Air leak from loose or split hose or leaking gasket, letting boost pressure escape seems a likely candidate. Finding it can be tricky.

Chris,

you might have something there, the sound, sounds like it's coming from the middle of under the bonnet, the near side.

Thanks a lot.

Yes it seems to be, it still pulls from 90 to 120 like you were just pulling away from the light in a normal car. It's just so damn loud.

Any ideas?

Unfortuantly, I can't shed any light on the problem, but tend to agree that it's air escaping from somewhere. I have that problem/sound on my car, and I've heard it on another too.

Sorry about Friday, I was with a customer trying to get a £75,000 Cadillac through an SVA, until it's power steering exploded! :innocent:

Call me, to make sure I'm in, but feel free to pop down anytime.:)

Hey no worries about Friday, It' always nice to take a run down the M20, well once you're past the M25 anyway. I'll give you a shout before I leave next time.

Free tip of the week: If you have a suspected air leak and access to a rolling road do this.

Remove the fan, refit nuts though to hold water pump pulley on. Spray all pipes showing boost with Fairy Liquid or similar. Run quickly up to max boost, no fans on the engine from external sources either, to stop bubbles blowing about. be quick, temps will rise fast. Trace source of bubbles and fix.

Can sometimes be done on the road, but airstream blows bubbles about.

On the rollers you can also listen for noise of air escaping with a length of hose. Don't stick it in the fan or moving belts, it can hurt, take your eye out or even bugger something mechanical... ::eek:
