Active Spoiler

The active spoiler was standard on UK cars and fitted as standard on the Jap GZ cars and as an option on the RZ's. I dont think it was put on the NA cars.

It's basically a small section spoiler which drops down below the front bumper when the car reaches 60mph and retracts again when the speed drops to 40.

It's really just a gizmo IMO - I've never noticed any difference whether it's up or down.

the spoiler's design is to balance the car in the corners. I have done a few tests with it, nothing too scientific you understand. But there is a fast corner near to where I live and I can do an indicated 80mph round it before the front starts to slide (with spoiler up). With the spoiler down it will do just under 85mph before it starts to slide.

Done this test a few times awith similar results.... but as mentioned this is not a scientific proof test.

But generally with cars as they go faster they get a pressure zone of air that builds up under the front bumper. This can cause lift and upset the balance of a car. The spoiler is designed to stop the pressure build up and equalise the front and rear grip. (In theory anyhow).
