Soop Dogg
As someone who was in the RAF in the past, one thing jumps out at me from your story. You failed the Pilot Selection, so you say your next LOGICAL step is to apply for the regiment. There's many, many steps in between these two jobs on the ladder of respect in the RAF. (Trying not to offend anyone here, so using the most diplomatic terms I can think of!) Why is the regiment logical alternative?? It is seen by many as the opposite end of the scale. Sheefa
Hi all and again thanks for your replies - they genuinely are really appreciated. Supraayf (Andrew) I see on the RAF site mate they are urgently in need of recruiting RAF Reg Officers and WSOs too. Definitely going to begin the app procedures now. Soop Dogg - As mentioned mate, flying has always been my passion but I've also been extrememly fond of the army hence the RAF Regiment appealed to me. Personally, I wouldn't want to join the army as this again comes down to creditability and sadly, no offence intended anyone, the Army has been through a lot recently and they're getting pretty slated at the mo. The RAF is where I belong I know that. I'm not interested in an office job and subsequent positions - I want to be there out on the ground for MOST of the time! Cheers Greg PS: Thank god the site is back up and running, I've been having cold sweats!

Don't forget Greg that an officers job is 'flying a desk'; not a ground appointment as the officer is an administrator and a planner.

Sheefa
Thanks SupraAyf. Surely Officers in the Reg get to see some action I hope! I'm now booked in for an chat session with local Armed Forces Careers Officer next week so I'll let you know how that goes. My three branch choices will be... 1) Regiment 2) Fighter Control 3) Weapons Systems Officer (dependent on eyesight) OR Intelligence. Any advices from yourself SupraAyf or others again appreciated. heckler
OK, I am serving RAF. and no, I'm not an officer. RAF is not a 9-5 Job, unless your an officer! (just my personal view). REG Officers in the UK mostly run the regiment of RAF bases - again 9-5. But you will get depolyed - up to 6 months at a time. I'm not 100% on Fighter controllers - but there 9-5 job is couped up in the back of a nimrod or sentry not been able to see where you are going...again get deployed "I Think" 3-4 months a year. WSO (or back seat drivers as I like to call em) aka navigators - next best thing to been a pilot i guess -persnally does nothing for me. Out of all the ones youve listed - I'd go Int. And I know a few Int. officers, they get out and about quite a bit. officer selection is tough. and you have to be supremly fit for REG officer too... Been an officer does have its advantages, pay and pension, I know a few of the "good" junior officers including a good friend of mine, alot of them struggle with money as the have this life style they have to keep, so alot gets spent on the "officer image" clothes, car (well you've got the car bit sorted )- etc.. On the flip-side to all this, these is me. technician. Out trade training is much longer and harder than any officer branch training bar aircrew. Mine was 16 months. Most people will be pun on a squaron, who never work 9-5, and deploy most of the time. I was put into a "bay" who fix bits of kit. My bay is an exception, (as some of you may know) I spend upto 5 months away a year in environments which are crap, getting shot at, getting mortart'd - and I LOVE IT. But if you want a "cool" job with good pay etc.. Take a look at NCO Aircrew, all the cool of flying, pay etc.. and you get to eat in the best mess's (sgt's) and you will have more respect from the smallies like me. As I have found that some officers are right stuck up twats. on a quick note, if any of the members are serving officersm please dont take this the wrong way, its just ny personal view! If you want be be "out there" look at Reg Officer, NCO aircrew, and even techies, like me. (as without uy, the planes dont fly)
Sheefa
Thanks Heckler. Found your post a little hard to read mate but from the sounds of it RAF Reg or Intelligence is the way forward. Not being pig headed at all, but after graduating from uni, getting pretty decent grades and working for 2 years I don't particularly want to go in at the bottom - hence looking at Officer positions. I'm a genuine guy mate who has a lot of time for everyone so 'hopefully' I won't full into the Officer = Tw@ts section! I'm pretty fit too, done 2 triathlons this year, 3 the last and got Tough Guy in January and Lands End to Jonah Groats cycle is a possibility for March. As long as I keep the fitness pace up, I'm thinking I should be *OK*. Haven't looked into the NCO role much but will have a ganders soon. Intelligence does seem more appealing. To be honest, I want to be in the thick of it and leading a Reg into the field is my ideal. It just depends what role most fulfills that ambition. imi
Sheefa - havent read the entire thread but I can see that its a difficult choice. She is young and is about to go to Uni, do youhonestly believe that she will hold out for you. If the answer is yes, then go with her. If I was in your position, unless I was a 100% sure that she was the one, I would follow my dreams as it sounds like a once in a lifetime opportunity that you may live to regret if you dont make use of it. Sheefa
Exactly my thoughts Imi. Unfortunately mate I have no idea if she's the one or not, I feel it but I also don't because I believe the time apart will make us drift......regardless. I've got to look after No 1 as they say for the timebeing whilst I'm young and fit-ish! Thanks mate.
