michael
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/5410472.stm Given how touchy Muslims are was this really a wise thing to come out with? Discuss...

Bobbeh
I think he'd be shot down no matter what he said.. anything a politician says usually ends up offending someone.

Pete
What is it they say? Never discuss religion and politics. Jesus was a drug taking homo, Gods doesn't exit and the BNP have a superb environmental policy. The media will pounce on anything and blow it out of all proportion. Personally I think there's nothing wrong in what he's said "visible statement of separation and of difference", it's only rational thought from his own upbringing that led him to it. [edit] That's not to say the reaction is irrational, I can understand what he was trying to achieve.

RobSheffield
I can to an extent see his point, in that it allows effective communication, but it shows ignorance of cultural, religious and racial difference.
GeordieSteve
We need ONE rule. Our schools can no longer celebrate Xmas so why should they be allowed to wear their religious dress. It's all pathetic. Each to their own, equal rights, worship what you want to worship
Pete
Our schools can no longer celebrate Xmas What? When did this happen? I'd be careful using words like "our" and "their".
GeordieSteve
Been going for a few years now amigo. Xmas being a Christian celebration. "our" and "their" shouldn't be a problem. We're talking Christian and Muslim. It's us and them the same as "men" and "women"
jamesmark
We can say anything about Christian's, left footers, Jehovah's etc but the moment anyone says anything about the Muslim religion all hell breaks loose. You dont see other religions out burning flags and having riots and threatning vengence. Are people in general that narrow minded that they think their religion is better than anyones and should never be questioned, is a Catholic less religious than a Muslim, is a Christian less religious than a Jehovah? I think people and not just Muslims are needing to learn a good old saying "Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me" One thing that really does get on my nerves is when at my works you have people speaking in their own language, to me thaty is ignorant, but can also be said that it is ignorant not to accept it. Just my 2p worth.

Nick
Surely the Muslim women that wear veils are showing selective discrimination towards deaf people, since they're unable to lip read. Weren't the RNID (The Royal National Institute for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People) interviewed for their opinion? This is outrageous. Then there's the bikers. A lot of shops, post offices, petrol stations and all banks request that you take off your lid when you go inside. Why should Muslims have special treatment, who's representing the rights of these people to cover their faces? Sarcasm aside, this is pathetic. Politicians are so scared of upsetting one minority or another that they can't say anything without being pounced on. If Muslim women want to cover their faces as well as their hair then let them. I don't think it'll make a blind bit of difference to "race relations" or whatever the latest PC term is now. As for a "deep lack of understanding", that works both ways. No one was interested in my views or beliefs when I worked in Saudi. Either you lived by the strict Islamic rules outside of the compund, or you would be arrested and thrown in prision/flogged/deported. They didn't tend to execute westerners, makes for bad press. They just leave them in prison to rot without a fair trial.
JohnK
He requested, not demanded. Complete over reaction by trouble making sections of the muslim communities, which of course the press love so much. This is England, a free country, he is an English MP and has the right to "ASK" what he likes. Weather anyone agrees or otherwise with his request is irrelevant
matt k
Each to their own i very much agree, but i do see a large amount of Muslim couples in Leeds city centre where the women is covered head to toe in black with only their eyes visible and the man is wearing Nicholas Deakin boots, Henri Lloyd jeans and a Paul and Shark jacket???? It is this point where i find it difficult to accept that it is a Religious/Cultural right and that any Non-Muslims shouldn't comment. michael
Walk into a bank in a crash helmet - you are asked to remove it Visit most pubs in a baseball cap - you are asked to remove it. MaveriK
Slightly off topic so i am sorry but these things really piss me off The Christmas thing does get up my nose as did the union jack thing. Its England, i am proud to be English and hence i like to see the cross, cabbies and council workers should have the same rights as me and if people dont like seeing it they can always go live somewhere else. I also like Christmas, for whatever reason its a time when people are nicer to each other and kids love it. And would i be right that Santa and Xmas lights was banned from some shopping center because it may offend people, what about the MAJORITY who find it offensive not to have it. imi
Anyway, for the record. I personally have no issue with women covering their hair / head as long as you can see their face. And I think that is what Jack Straw was saying too...

The other day, the missus came home from work saying that new company ruling is that staff cant give each other birthday cards, in fear of being 'ageist' ! wtf has this country come to.....
