Tricky-Ricky
I have what i'm told are factory option electronically adjustable dampers, but no controller, so i am presuming that the damping is set permanently on soft, so i am wondering if anyone has any ideas about doing a bodge to get them to run a harder setting, they have four wires coming out of the top, so i'm presuming that the red and black are a permanent + and - and the other two are for adjustment, so do you think that buy supplying one of the other two with 12V it would change the damping or screw the damm things up?? http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid204/p32211e0f04b237b9f70ea22c0e314720/ef83cfdc.jpg
Gaz Walker
I have what i'm told are factory option electronically adjustable dampers I've never heard of that. The only electronic* suspension system was REAS on the late VVTi cars. I use that term loosely because it was more hydraulic than electronic. Gaz. Alex
Could it be a retrofitted TEMS system? (Think it's called TEMS anyway)
Chris Wilson
They are probably some aftermarket dampers, I have a TRMS setup here, it's nothing like that, totally different system. I don't believe the ones you have were ever a factory option.
Thorin
Could it be a retrofitted TEMS system? (Think it's called TEMS anyway) Could be, was an option on the MKIII and Soarer's wasn't it? Also a more modern version on the Landcruisers?? On the MKIII I think putting the gearbox in "Sport" mode set firmer suspension.

Tricky-Ricky
Well do you think my suggestion is worth a try? the general consensus on the Supra forums was that they where factory option, so thats what i was going by, if i could afford to throw £1500 at them for a Tein set up i would;)

AndyTT
Hi bud, Saw yir post on the LSOC:) TEMS, best thing since sliced bread, Toyota Electronic Modulated Suspension. As you will probally have a good idea what it is, but to answer your question about stiffening them up, then here goes. If they are factory fitted then when the PWR is in normal mode, the suspension is nice and supple, but if you hit a fast bend and have to steer quickly to get round it, the suspension will automaticly stiffen up to help prevent body roll. Flick the switch over to PWR, and there is a noticable stiffening of the suspension, don't know about the the Supra, but this also removes some power assist, and holds the revs right up to the red line (7200) before changing. No here is the best bit, the diagnostic port under the bonnet, if you bridge a certain two points (can never remember which ones, but I "just go and do it") you set the shockies to 0 rebound, and the suspension is rock hard, and i mean, rock hard:) The Gen 5 JDM Celica has the same set-up, so no doubt the Supra may have been giving the same, as an option maybe:idea: Andra
Tricky-Ricky
Thanks for that but unfortunately they are not connected up and there are no plugs/wires visible that would indicate that they ever where:( which is why i'm looking for a bodge;)

Hermit
The Soarer's TEMS is controlled by a seperate control unit which reads from a steering sensor amongst other things (probably speed as well). So fitting the rest of the system wouldn't be practical. But... it might be possible to get it set into the diagnostic mode Andra mentions (also known as 'trackday mode'). Of the four wires, two are a sensor and the other two control the damping with a piezo actuator. If we could find out what signal to drive the actuator with, maybe it's as easy as feeding it some +12V through a resistor to get it into trackday mode. But is it TEMS? If you post the colours of the wires I can check em against the schematic for you. I think that would be pretty conclusive since there's sixteen wires altogether! Hermit
Sorry I wasn't thinking straight - the colours on the schematic will be for the wires in the loom, not at the strut.

Will there be colours for the the plugs that connect to the shocks? might be able to figure it out from that?
Hermit
Will there be colours for the the plugs that connect to the shocks? might be able to figure it out from that? No, it doesn't have any info past the connector on the loom that would connect to the plug you have hanging off your shocks. I don't have tems on my Soarer to check against I'm afraid. This is what the loom connector is shown as: http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid216/p12e6e8bcb10939882f8a432c612ba77f/eca8ed69.jpg reckon your plug might match that? AndyTT
Looks like the shockies were fitted by the previous owner in Nippon, the front shocks from a Soarer do fit the Supra. Andra
