DamanC
Stop it! Cant comment on GOW but SC is going to be a biggie. Made by the same fella that done TA. Anyone played Company of Heroe's yet?
Ark
That Supreme Commander looks identical to Total Annihilation, which I was playing nearly 10 years ago. Obviously that genre hasn't moved on at all!
Snooze
That Supreme Commander looks identical to Total Annihilation, which I was playing nearly 10 years ago. Obviously that genre hasn't moved on at all! Which in turn was identical to Command & Conquer, and before that Dune II, which we were playing 15 years ago.... What amuses me most is that although the technology and the complexity of these games has changed, the strategy of playing them is EXACTLY the same as it was back then! Ark
Agreed, the same basic tactics from Dune2 are still valid. I was really referring to the fact that TA combined land air and sea forces, plus the fact that your 'commander' built structures in situ, rather than simply plonking them somewhere once the construction yard had finished them. I did enjoy the extensibility of TA though - the extra maps and troops you could download.

True, the gameplay is what makes the games good, many of these modern games are the same but with fancier graphics, its rare you get totally fresh ideas. I guess many people picking these games up for the first time will be more impressed.
Mike
Can't wait for GOW... looks ace.. Thorin
Does look good I remember getting my first PC and then me and my mate trying to figure out networking and BNC connectors to play Doom against each other. We bought a couple of NIC's and a coax cable... then a couple of hours later discovered we needed terminators and couldn't just connect the PC's up with the cable. Ahh the memories. Bobbeh
Yeah, that sucked Doom was a classic, as was Wolfenstein. Thorin, been there too with those pesky end pieces
Mike
Hexen? could be... I think we must have started it and then gone back to Doom at the time... couldn't remember the name of it though...
Thorin
Thorin, been there too with those pesky end pieces We soon progressed to upto half a dozen players on BNC, then got a 8-port 10MB hub, then 8-port 10/100MB hub, then 12-port 10/100 switch. Then things got a little overkill with some big Cabletron (now Enterasys) modular managed switch thing the size of a large microwave

Ahh the memories. haha I remember at college (when i was doing GNVQ IT) we setup our own network in one of the computer rooms and played 8 player Doom. the IT guys promptly reported us to 'the head of year' when they found out. but the head just gave us merits in networking because we showed intuitive
Bobbeh
I never played Doom on a network, I got into online gaming (multiplayer PC games) with Quake and QuakeWorld.. that was a wonderful experience joining a server for the first time.. especially seeing people all dressed up in their customised skins, hilarious watching the cookie monster and star wars characters do battle with the Quad damage

Bobbeh
Just a shame about the lag in the early days, you werent supposed to outrun the nails fired from the nailgun nothing beats those early days of mass Gibbagary.
Thorin
I remember thinking GLQuake looked fantastic when the original 3DFX card came out. A mate had already got one and me and another mate took one look at Carmageddon (which we'd play 6 player multiplayer for hours! ) running on a 3DFX card and went straight to Meadowhall to buy one
Bobbeh
Yeah 3DFX was amazing back then, and then the Voodoo2. The biggest drifference was seeing the typical pixely PC look vanish to be replaced with clear lighting effects and textures. Quake 2 looked amazing Carmageddon was fun

Ark
I've got all the originals somewhere of carmageddon 1 & 2, and the "splat pack", and TDR which was the best for driving, but the worst for running people over - they just wouldn't die!
