Car options for £8k?

My girlfriend currently has a VW golf R32 which is proving a little too costly to run so she's thinking of selling it with a view to buy something slightly cheaper to own/run.

She's an accountant so has to visit clients fairly often so the car can't be too lairy.

Her criteria

1. Cheaper to run than a 3.2litre R32 Golf

2. She would prefer something japanese so she could join in come show season

3. Sporty and fairly rapid but not too big/manly

4. 4 seats (not too important though)

5. something reliable and capable of covering 10,000+ miles per year

She will have around £8000 to spend after finance is settled etc. So what should she look at?

All opinions appreciated.

Could be on to a winner with that one. I'll see what she says.

Yep was the best hot hatch when it first hit the scene, its arguably still as good as any hatch thats come out since. And now its depreciated quite a lot it makes excellent value, you should be able to pick up a 51/52 plate 40k miles or so fhsh no probs for 8k. Lots of standard ones available.

I was gonna have one but fell for the supra instead!

Petrol wise shud be better than the r32 as long as you stay out of v-tec, then again when you want a bit of a spirited drive just hit the rev limter and its pretty damn quick with a great sound for a 4cly! Also love where the gear knob is just like a touring car and real close to your steering wheel.

Handling is sharp and responsive!

Thats about it really, i wudnt expect any probs with honda's neither, is up there with toyota in the reliability stakes. Insurance wont be too bad, group 17 but for a women cheap for what it is!

Thanks mate, she's keen anyway which is the main thing. Didn't realise they could be had so cheaply but just had a look on the auotrader site and there's loads on there.

Methinks a test drive is in order.

Yep loads, when they first came out everyone had one as they where the hatch to have but now obviously everyone has got rid and moved on, same with cooper s, clio 182 is suprisingly decent value but id have a ctr over one of them anyday just for reliability.

If not the ctr and she wants to be a little different 2k more gets the DC5 integra, dc2 is also an option but I'm guessing she won't want something as raw as that?

We do like the DC5's but they are too expensive at the moment i think, maybe next year.

She say's the DC2 is a bit too 'Manly' as she put's it  women!

Honda Integra Type-R (you can find a cracking one for that price)

S2000 (if she can stretch her budget)

Bread Van - oh sorry, I meant Civic Type R ;)

My sister owns a Honda Integra TR, white DC2......awesome machine. and If you go for the UK ones, with the four small front lights, they certainly dont look manly at all :D
