Max Headroom
Not things like the turbo's exploding or the battery not working. I was looking through the posts and as far as I can tell in no particular order these things happen 1. The Jesus handle breaks. 2. Boot rubbers need replacing. 3. Window mechanisms foul up. 4. The fuel filler cap breaks off. 5. leds in 3rd light go. 6. ariel malfunctions. All little niggles but can you think of any more?
Bobbeh
Out of those, I've suffered from 2 and 5 with the dash LEDs. I would say the Jesus handle is a common fault unless some nob has pulled on it too hard.

chilli
I've only really found squeeky boot rubbers (easy and cheap as chips to fix) and my old aerial was a bit worn and then like a numpty I snapped it anyway so I replaced the mast only, been fine since. Other than that, hmmm I'm struggling here to think of anything oh wait stock top rad pipes tend to droop into the fan and die, mine did. Replaced it with nice shiney chrome hardpipe kit, easy fix and looks nice too

(went on TT AND on the N/A !) ?? Easily repaired though.
JohnA
Up to now I don't think that any of the above can be classified as a 'common' fault Bad maintenance will bring up all sorts of problems on older cars, but that is to be expected. For example, why would the matrix or the rad go if the coolant has been flushed every couple of years?

I agree with what you say but trawling through recent threads these do seem to be the most "common". A sort of Supra specific common fault as you will!! Steve W
AND, i'm not the worlds BEST 'maintain'-er, but, how do you maintain the Grab-Handle ?? Yes, you CAN spray the boot rubbers with lube/Rubber Stuff, but unless you did it from new. . . . (AND, never had any OTHER car which needed it done ???) Come to think of it, never had any problems with Dash bulbs on any other car either ???? i WILL say maybe the rough-ride and exhaust vibes (??) don't do the bulbs any favours though. Ian Ian
Boot rubbers "sqeaking" Radiator splitting just under the rad cap Hair line crack on the Jspec brake bleed nipple "yellowing " Jspec headlights All age releated i think.........to be fair the will be LOADS more problems with "other" makes of cars Cheers Ian
Bobbeh
I agree with what you say but trawling through recent threads these do seem to be the most "common". A sort of Supra specific common fault as you will!! What hes implying is that it sounds like a problem on cars that havent exactly been maintained well or have supporting documentation to prove it. Also I dont think yellow headlights is a 'common fault', just in the import scene, but thats like saying fading paint is too. Boot rubbers dont squeak, they split then the tailgate bangs against the latch at the rear causing an annoying rattle.
BASHTHEBISHOP
from what i have seen on the forum i would say valve stem seals has to be a common one.
flukey-lukey
Number 1 and 2 on the first list so far, not exactly bad problems though are they!? Think my valve stem seals will get done during the winter months (fingers crossed I have enough time)
supRo
Common body problems - Rusting: Aound tailgate window, drivers side bottom corner. Sometimes around rear wiper. Bottom of doors with Stock sideskirts and join with front wings I've seen the above on loadsa Supras
Mike M
I suppose coil pack clips should be in there but that's really an age/heat thing, maybe Mr T could have used better plastics.
hogmaw
The most common fault is crash following inability to control back end in the wet. But for stock car there is nothing more to add than what's already been listed, when you start tweaking & modding, THEN the problems usually appear
JohnA
coil pack connectors, now that might be a potential weak point on an older car. Crank pulley perhaps as well. Mind you, mine is no spring chicken and has got *none* of the above (not even the whole thread!) so the term 'common faults' might be a bit unfair. Matt Harwood
Things I've seen that I'd class a common faults:- Bad solder joints on the right of the dash top, (abs, mil, oil) Crank pulley Boot rubbers Window mechanism Late second turbo issues Slight misfire at idle Front crank oil seal Things that are age related faults:- Coil pack clips Solid/split cam cover hoses, (under cam cover) Yellow'd, and/or leaking headlights Rust at the door bottoms due to poorly fitted skirts Valve stem oil seals Blocked/leaking heater matrix Rear drop links causing suspension knocks (generally at low speed) That's all I can think of at the moment. I have to say, I've never heard of a fuel filler cap breaking off:blink: IMO aerial problams are mostly down to bent/damaged masts.
