djg99
The last couple of times i've started my car up, i get what looks like blue smoke coming from my exhaust, i've had a look under the bonnet but cant see any leaks anywhere, and the oil etc is all fine. Am i worrying over nothing or could there be somthing wrong with the car!!
BigRoy
Sounds like turbo seals.

Ian C
Sounds more to me like valve stem seals. Not as bad news and isn't a big problem. -Ian

scooby_doo_do
If its the valve stem seals i think its about £1000 labour to fix it.... Or... You could live with the little blue smoke in the morning....
Steve W2
Unless you do it yourself the valve stem seals or the turbo seals will lighten your wallet of a fair few hundred quid just in labour charges:( Hope its okay mate:)
Ian C
Most of the labour charge is taking the head off, I hear you can do it yourself by coiling clean rope into the cylinder via the spark plug hole, which the valves then rest against while they are disconnected from the rest of the valve train. That saves a lot of effort I would have though. I've never done this but it's the way I'd try and do it. -Ian
Terminator
I think there are details on the rope trick on MKIV.com. Unless it is absolutely necessarily I would avoid taking the head off if you can.
Jake
Originally posted by djg99 The last couple of times i've started my car up, i get what looks like blue smoke coming from my exhaust Is this only when starting the car after it has been stood cold for several hours? That's what mine does and I'm near 100% sure it's worn valve stem oil seals. Contary to what folks say about about not removing the cylinder head to change the stem seals, Chris Wilson says you are probably better to remove the head to do this job. Aerotop Dave
What about a puff of smoke when the car hasn't been started for several days?
dude
If ypu want to do it without taking off the head , forget rope , use compressed air !!!! I took the head off !!!! Dude :flame Dev

Terminator
Still sounds like stem seals. Often with stem seals you get different amounts of smoke or even none each time you cold start, as it is very rare for all seals to go at once. Not if the puff of smoke in morning bothers you less than the £1000+ it would cost to fix it.
