(Lan means you would be using a wired connection)

Kittyclaws
Little Question from me. I want to get a Xbox 360 in the near future, and start online gaming, what is the best router for this. will have to be wireless as Xbox will be in another room, also thinking of streaming music to my sound system downstairs, but mainly it will be for the Xbox
chilli
Netgear DG834N is what I am using at the moment and it is great. Wireless works very good with great coverage.... http://www.netgear.com/Products/RoutersandGateways/RangeMaxNEXTWirelessRoutersandGateways/DG834N.aspx Thanks, I think this is looking like one of the strongest contenders for the money tbh It gets mostly top notch reviews, with just the odd one where someones says it 'doesn't work'. There will always be cases where people can't get them working, it's not hard but of course like anything, everything needs to be set up right. Not the routers fault though. Pete
Pete whats the best make that is Mac OS X and WIN XP compatible ? The reason will be down the hardware and how it talks to the routers. All wireless hardware should talk in the standards setout so you can wonder around with your Mac or PC notebook and use it wherever you want - that's the whole point right? If all the devices say they support IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g then they ought to work happily with each other at 54Mbps. (The higher speed stuff is still pretty flaky in my experience) Maybe they just mean their USB wireless adapters aren't compatible? Although this suggests otherwise. I'm surprised that some manufacturers say they do not support Mac, but I don't know enough about this scenario to comment authoritively. [edit] - Yes, I'm right. Any wireless router should wrk with Mac OS-X - see here In practice you'll often find that it's best to stick to a hardware manufacturer throughout your implementation - ie Netgear router/PCI card/USB stick may perform better than Dlink Router, Belkin USB device, MSI PCI card, Intel Centrino, etc. Especially if you want to implement the higher speed 108 connections. Things to test if you're getting bad connections are to remove all encryption and security - then see how it performs. I had an issue at home where enabling WEP caused major speed reductions and constant dropouts with poor range. Disabling WEP was far better. I moved to WPA and things improved and I still retained security I needed. (Which I should've used in the first place as it's more secure, it was a pre Windows SP1 setup initially before WPA was properly supported) Bizzarely something else to try is not testing the equipment next to each other. We've found that when you put a wireless notebook right next to a router to setup then drop outs etc occur - moving it a couple of metres away helps. Whitesupraboy2
netgear wireless here too My mum had an extension on her bungalow so an outside wall became an inside wall and the signal wasnt strong enough. So i got a Netgear Max (i think) and that thing has an amazing range / strength. Netgear is the easiest to maintain and look after with a great user friendly control console

If so you'll be able to remote management and one of us guru's on here would be able to look at your wireless settings and see if its the router or the laptop thats the problem
michael
D-Link here, had the DSL-604+ which was excellent, recently swapped to a DSL-G624M for the faster wireless - very easy to set up but lots of features if you want to get more advanced. PC World seem to be very cheap on D-Link at present.

Netgear DG834N Rangemax NEXT Wireless ADSL2 Router bundled with a Rangemax NEXT PCMCIA Adapter £105.. which would normally cost £226.. the PCI adapter is usually around 113 quid, shame its not bundled with a PCI adapter instead
