Underworld
Hey guys, got the latest version of 3d studio last night. It looks pretty nuts. Im going to have a go at modelling a car once ive got the hang of it. Any one else had a go at modelling a car in 3d studio? Check out this link. Got some wicked looking stuff in it. http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/carrender/
Thorin
I've not used 3DS Max but I've had a play around with Cinema 4D which is pretty good. A lot to learn with these packages though.
Ewen
Not 3DS, but I've had a crack with Rhino and recently with Unigraphics. My son did a cracking 3-D Mini in Rhino and rendered it in Flamingo, but this stuff really is a labour of love to do it properly, and addictive. After 9 / 10 hours a day of 3-D design on boats, I dont have much energy left for a virtual Supra, but one day I'll finish it off. You could apply bit-map graphics, re-model body kits, design your own wheels, the lot. Look forward to seeing some of your results.

I wanted a colour that would show highlights and shadows, and I just messed around with the material colour. It's been a side project for a while, and I must confess I had to search to find the files again, I haven't looked at it for a while, my first render is dated January 2004 !.My most recent is June this year. I reckon, it would have taken about 1-2 weeks of solid modelling to get to the point I'm at now say 8 hours a day so between 56 - 112 hours. This was my first attempt at Surface modelling, usually I stick to poly's rather than surfaces, and there are still a few areas I'm not happy with - around the lights for instance. Turbo squid do do some good models, but they also turn out some complete crocks. Is your mate in this line of work then ? Mike
Marco
Good to see there are some creative people here To model a car properly you need about 4 weeks, incl intererieur. But it all depends on how much detail you want... The cars for Gran Turismo on the PS3 take 6 months each! But that probably includes sending the car for approval etc... Here's one I made for my latest game... (loadingscreen - not in game )

Pixelfill
Jesus Mike thats amazing! Thanks Rob, just wish I could find the time to finish her off. And Marco, thats even awesomer! I concur, Very nice Marco At the risk of hijacking this thread, what sort of poly budgets are you guys working with nowadays Marco, or is it all surfaces, are there any measures that get applied to models now to ensure that you don't cripple the graphics throughput. Just out of curiosity you understand Edit: oh and what package are you using now, is it Maya as I understand a lot of studios switched from 3DS Max to Maya Mike
Marco
Cheers guys For PS2 and PSP the polys are still quite limited, around 5K or 6K for top level of detail. We usually use 4 models for each car, lowest resolution a few hundred polys. Xbox360 and PS3 can easily run +50K poly cars! Big difference there. At my company we're not developing for those platforms yet, but will do pretty soon Get ready for some more ford action lol! We use maya and photoshop. Also some software thats developed in house. Autodesk bought Maya from Alias, so maya and 3dsmax will be merging more or less into the same program... too bad really. Workflow in maya is so much better than 3ds Clicky

Mike i think he used to be a few years back, but he now does it as a hobby now. but he has many contacts still for programs and 3d models ect. I'd love to get into this, but i think i'm too old to start learning this kind of thing i do dable with 3ds when i get spare time though
Pete
I didn't realise Autodesk had bough M@ya - sensible business move from them I think. I note 3DSMax 9 is out now. You're never too old Gaz. You just need a good book. I've dabbled in it, but never had the time to devote that is needed to learn it.
Underworld
Wow, some really cool replies to this thread! Im allways dabbling in bits and pieces. I consider myself creative even for a software engineer lol. Theyre some pretty swell looking 3d models guys! Ill let you know how I get on. I found a site that holds blueprints for cars, and Ive got some good hi-res supra blueprints. So im just learning 3d studio max (to the annoyance of my girlfriend) and am sculpting the supe. Id love to model my car. Some of the lighting/paint effects you can do are insane on that prog. Ill probably get bored half way and abandon it lol.
