Mike
OK, I think there are a number of ways of doing this but thought I'd throw it out there and see what you all think... I have a broadband account with Toucan and the obligatory USB modem supplied by them (Speed is 2Mb). The current set up is direct to the PC, then I share the connection from the PC to either Charlotte's laptop or XBox 360 (this is one or the other, annoyingly). Then, when I have to dial in to work stuff on my work lap top I have to disconnect all of it, plug the USB into work lap top and go from there... so everything on the PC/Laptop/XBox is disrupted. So I need a way of keeping them all on-line at the same time. Problems are; 1. The modem supplied is USB, so I can't just pick up a router and have them all plugged in? can I? Also I would prefer not to change the modem as I know their customer services peeps will wash their collective hands of me if I get problems and am caught using an after-market modem.... 2. The Firewall sits on the PC, so I would prefer to have everything going via the PC if possible? could I just get a router and connect the PC's 'shared connection' out to the router (or switch?) and connect everything in from there? 3. I can't be wireless for the work laptop.. it's company policy that the lappy doesn't go near a wireless network.. god knows why? ..and what exactly is the difference between a router and a switch? no seems to know and I keep getting different answers.. Any suggestions or solutions to the problem would be mucho appreciated.. and any links to specific 'recommended' devices are always welcome (basically I can send them on to network peeps to purchase!).. Tar!
Ric
get a wireless router for your laptop and pc (as long as your pc and laptop have wireless on there) Reading your post you cant have wireless on the laptop so you just plug it into one of the ethernet ports Routers have hardware firewalls and port blocking. ive not run a firewall since ive had my router and not one problem with people getting in etc An adsl router make sure you get one with a built in adsl modem it distributes the dsl through the wireless or through the ethernet ports on it, a switch only transfers what is plugged into it, ie 4 machines the router will also have 4 ethernet ports which you can plug your xbox into, and all will be able to use the net at the same time
Thorin
You need an ADSL router, some have built in 4 port switch. Most will have some form of firewall built in which will be perfectly adequate.

JustGav
You still connect a laptop to a 834 using the wired method, and the wireless can be used for the XBOX and other things... That way not violating the company standards...

Ian W
It is. It would still be "near a wireless network" if that's the case then he's violating company policy virtually all the time. i can detect at least half a dozen wireless networks from my house so even though none are mine would i still be 'violating company policy'? i doubt it as there'll be hundreds of thousands of them by now and almost impossible to not be in the vicinity of a wireless network. Mike
Sorry, I forgot to add that since my company will be buying the kit they won't buy anything wireless... so it has to be a 'wired' solution for now.... which is fine by me.... not that I'm cheap or anything... but, you know everyone like free stuff.... Ric
you can get 4port adsl routers with the built in modem. without wireless.
Mike
OK, I literally know nothing about this (heance the thread)... So the little phone plug thingy RJ11(?) would plug into the router and then normal RJ45 Ethernet out to the various devices? and I can manage the Firewall from the PC? RedM
Slightly off topic but... We have a wired adsl router connected to a pc. My other half doesn't want a wireless network but I do. Could I get a laptop and have it talk to a wireless doodah that is connected to the wired router? Basically, can you daisychain routers? Most routers would include some firewall capability to protect you from inbound attacks, but not some dodgy piece of spyware on your machine connecting out. If you're worried about that (I wouldn't as long as you've got up to date anti-virus and run a spyware scan every now and again), then you'd want a software firewall on each PC/laptop. If you've a spare one you could buy a wireless access point and connect that up to a spare port on the router. Then a wireless dongle (great word) in your laptop. Just buy a wireless Access Point, and plug it into one of the Ethernet ports. Silly really though, since the WAP will cost about the same as a full Wireless Router (which is what in effect you are building..)
