Jake
Sad to see Rotweilers getting this bad press at the moment. They're good dogs if trained correctly. Rosie, not sure if you were on your Hols at the time, did you see what happened with my great dane recently?
colsoop
I think if i remember rightly the dogs were indeed guard / family dogs. They lived on the roof of the pub as this was how thieves etc could enter the premises, however somebody left a fire door open which led to this tragedy. Labelling dogs as dangerous is unfortunate, i personally think it is down to the owners of the animals to train them properly and ensure that they know their place within the pack (family) Just like there are no bad kids just bad parents. supraaaaaaaaaa
my last post was in jest but as people have said its unfair to label dogs, nowadays people children are more likely to hurt someone than a dog !!!!!! should all kids be killed? they must be more of a risk !! Supragal
Exactly, all dog ownership should be banned If it saves just one life it's a sacrifice worth making. And anyway, no-one *needs* a pet dog. -Ian No-one *needs* a supra, but you could easily run someone over in one and kill them. Lets not get silly. Besides you're a miserable old git. Besides you're a miserable old git. Haha just rolling out the default "ban it" response that's used in circumstances like this. Mainly to drill into people that anything they like can be banned if the same rules are applied. Thanks for participating Baby licences sound like a good idea, discuss -Ian

You wait til you meet mine and then you'll dislike them even more. Indeed. Babies should be but theres no way of controlling it. Problem is I'd go all hitler about it so best not let me be in control... ps you are a miserable old git
RedM
Rotters are very smart. My mum has two of them and the buggers amazed us one evening by strolling into the living room. At first we thought the gate (floor to ceiling with two spring action latches) had been left open. Then they came in again. It turns out that the older, larger one holds the bottom latch down (open) and bites the gate. The smaller baby climbs onto him and presses the other latch. Big one then pulls the gate open with his mouth. Clever bastids.

mattanna
Depends on training like people say, my 6 month old pedigree labrador is 4 stone(and not overweight) already and has big teeth so could also easily injure a child, although she is so used to my 2 year old and 4 year old now she is not bothered.Dogs need socialising to things before they are 20 weeks old, after that anything they have not seen before can traumatise them, for instance children. The owners were obviously not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Any dog that is threatening or not properly controlled should be watched, warned(or the owner warned) and if needs be put down.It is often the case that these big aggressive looking dogs are owned by retards who cannot control themselves let alone the dog, anything with 4 legs and sharp teeth can never be trusted 100% especially not when weighing 8 stones!! RedM
WOW! That's smart! I'm down there for a flying visit soon. If we have time I'll get them to put the gate back to how it was and see if they remember. I'll video it too. Another trick of theirs is to get access to the main garden. As the gate is open the little one yelps like it's in pain. The person going through the gate almost always pauses, looks over and the bigger dog rushes the gate, pushes against it. Then the little one dashes over and through then you spend ages trying to get them both back. My mum falls for it every time.
Kittyclaws
i remember when the last time it was in the media. one SCUM OF THE EARTH newspaper went round various vets to ask them what dog they least trusted when it came to treatment etc, and pretty much all of them said the same dog which shocked the SCUM OF THE EARTH newspaper, " But what about Rotties, staffs etc " they cried. The vets replied that they have no bother with those dogs. The dog they named as the one least trusted was the Jack russel. I now see the SCUM newspaper is at it again with words like Devil dogs, Beast, etc. We used to have a Rottie years ago, she was very much part of the family,, very loving etc,

Gazboy
A dog is what you make it. From the moment you bring it home you are it's alpha male/female pack leader, and it will learn from you. Staffy's are so goddam friendly (Jamie will back me up on this) you have to wonder what the bloody hell these chavscum owners do to their dogs to make them Satan on a leash. The entire family from the first attack are clearly retarded. They were moving furniture and not keeping an eye on the kid or the dogs. The dogs were used as guard dogs, not pets so wouldn't have been socialised properly (if at all). The DDA is the biggest load of bullshit ever. All four breeds are not recognised by the UK kennel club- so how the hell is anyone suppose to identify a breed if the UKKC which many argue is the leading authority don't recognise the breeds involved? Somebody may have a better memory than me, but didn't this kick off because of a lot of attacks by Rottweilers, Dobermans, German Sheppards and a single Pit Bull in 1990-1991? 3 of the most prolific attackers weren't banned, but the dog that got it's victim in the paper got the entire breed banned? WTF? The daft thing is that it's perfectly legal to own some truely dangerous dogs because they didn't forfill the media hype of "The devil dogs" such as the Canary Dog, Caucasian Ovtcharka etc... There is one breed in Africa that was used to control and sheppard slaves (and bring them back by force if they escaped), the name escapes me but it's legal to own here. Rob
Yes, so therefore no-one can say that no dog would never attack someone. There must always be a risk, no matter what people say about the methods owners use to train their dogs. I would liken it to putting bleach and chemicals in a low cupboard where your children could get to them. You can take as many precautions as possible but there's always a risk. The only way to be safe is to put the bleach in a high cupboard. But then I'm very cautious with dogs, never have an animal in the house that can actually cause you serious harm, is my opinion. Supragal
But then I'm very cautious with dogs, never have an animal in the house that can actually cause you serious harm, is my opinion. Does that include cats? I mean a cat can sleep on your head and suffocate you...
