SBS are part of the Royal Marines, as are Arctic warfare Cadr and Jungle Warfare Unit, you pass your Marine training then can go for SBS.The SAS can be made up of people from any of the Armed forces,as in they are selected from RAF,Army, Navy or man on the street. The SAS is a British Army Regiment so once you join you are in the Army. The SBS specialise in Amphibious warfare only as a rule whereas the SAS break into specialist units and can cope with pretty much anything, amphibious, jungle, transport, and especially airborne assault. The SAS are seen to be the best trained troops around, even though a few of them have been killed in Iraq, ireland etc, that is generally because they work so far behind enemy lines or with them. There is always competition between Marines and the Army, but generally speaking I would rate the units as follows SAS,Royal Marines(including SBS),Parachute Regiment.American forces like navy Seals and 182nd Airborne division are obviously quite good, but there succes rate in operations is poor compared to British units, and Americans seem to be more gung ho and power mad whereas British units tend to be more calculated and patient, and more disciplined and psychologically stable. And remeber Paddy Ashdown of the Liberal democrats was in the SBS so they can't be all that!! lol

Are you sure you've been reading the same books as me mate!

Not only have i obviously not being reading the same books as you i am talking from experience, no i was not in any of these units but have worked with them, it is not worth commenting on these threads anymore as the subject matter is "subjective" all i can say is do not believe everything you read. The SBS are part of the Royal Marines(i.e the Navy), the SAS are not(i.e the Army), they are all tough men but more importantly they are tough in the mind, the Arnold Schwarzenegger types tend not to do well, and for instance when in Bosnia witnessing women ripped open and having dead dogs stuffed in their wombs, being tough in the mind helps a lot more than being strong in the arm

Yup. SAS against a B2 Bomber, F16s, Apaches, etc anyday.....

LOL

probably. nothing that cant be handled by one man using a heat seaking surfice to air missile(SAM) just like tanks now pretty much obselite if dealt with properly. SAS and SBS are the best SF in the world second to none. wasn't the SAS the first ever SF unit ever formed in the world?

Nope - the Boer beat us to that one by quite a bit. There have been other 'special forces' throughout military history but in modern times I think the honour goes to the Boer who created the first commandos.

Well, we might not have created the first SF units, but we have the best ones now. Every SF unit in the world is judged against our boys, even the yanks in the know admit that our SF's can get the job done, where others would fail, including their own.

Sorry to be all non Military but what is the SBS?

You only live 35 miles away from them Tut Tut :search:

Mossad?! They are not the Isreali special forces. They are just their version of MI5/MI6.

AFAI was aware they are a hard arsed bunch of operatives that take part in recconnaisance, information gathering, tactical situation analysis, and various subversive activities now what is the SAS do exactly???? I was also led to beleive that they are as heavily armed as any SAS unit and have far less scruples about whom they bump off with no questions asked.

I guess we'll never know tbh. You ask anyone who the best is and they'll say their own. Do you think a yank would ever admit the SAS are better than Delta Force? or vice versa for that matter?

Yup the Delta force guys the SAS lads 1/4 of the Delta strength handed their asses on a platter on a massive inter forces relations excercise wouldn't admit to not being as good as the SAS lol. They complained that the SAS had cheated by sneaking up on them WTF :D then sulked off home :)

Isn't it true that if you fail the entrance requirements for the SBS you can still get into the SAS?

Only the swimming section. You can fail to get into either as many times as your body can actually take it.

its worth noting the sas are drawn up from the creme de la creme of soldiers from the paras, marines, logistics cor and more - and anyone who ever says "yeh i was/am in the sas" are bullshiting ;)

You'll find the SAS aren't that exclusive, they will take talent from wherever it comes from, I know of people that went for selection from the RAF and didn't return to their units for several years :)

Recently the SAS and SBS because of the stretched nature of the forces and tightening of budgets have been operating in each others fields often a SAS unit replacing an SBS one in theater. And like every unit in the forces people get attached to other units to fill gaps.

SAS for the ignorant - SBS for those in the know!!

Boll*cks... :D

Shouldn't you be having a punch up in a chippie somewhere :p

I've not had much dealings with SAS, but i have with SBS. Our SF is the best, (SBS in 1st place :p ) As for the Navy seals, you would be surprised what almighty f#ck ups they have done.

Why would I be surprised the Yanks have made f*ck ups ROFL

Didn't surprise me in gulf war the sequel when they shot one of our tornado's down with a patriot battery at Ali Al Salem. Also didn't surprise me when one of them launched a 66 at one of our Puma helicopters in said same week, thank christ the imbecile was so well trained he missed by miles.
