carl0s
Should there be something in this box? It looks like it's been dry for quite some time. http://www.amtleasing.co.uk/supra/coolant.jpg
Steve Cargill
Erm, yes!!! On the left side as you look at it there is a Min and a Max line. It needs to be topped up with coolant to between those marks. When the engine is cold take off the radiator cap. It should be full.
carl0s
i've just been trying the radiator cap, but I can't get the fecker off - it has folded edges underneath... what's the crack? BTW there is a hose coming into this coolant box that goes to nothing - am presuming this is just to allow air to fill where the coolant comes out? carl0s
hey I just had another thought. Any chance that this could be related to my air con not working? Oh yeah and what kind of coolant should I be buying from halfrauds then? It's a UK spec. thanks, Carl
Steve Cargill
For the rad cap, push down and twist anti-clock I think, should take about 1/3 turn and pop off. The tank is called an expansion tank and yes the other pipe is just a vent for air and also to safely blow any exess coolant out.
carl0s
thanks Steve. It's this full: http://www.amtleasing.co.uk/supra/rad.jpg Basically it's full to the top as far as the actual radiator itself goes, but not full to the cap if you know what I mean. Steve Cargill
I'm pretty certain that it should be right to the top, can't quite remember. At least the core is covered so you arn't dry. I've always used Toyota 4-life, do a search, I'm sure there are a few suggestions.
toyotasuprauk
That level looks ok but sadly not related to your air con. That probably just needs a re gas.
Terminator
That fluid level is very low, it should be right up to the top of the neck of the rad. The white box should be filled to the max mark.
carl0s
only one problem now. Some fool went and filled the white box about an inch above "max", and with undiluted coolant. is that bad?
Nick_TC
The fool wants a slap If I were you, I'd get a full system drain/refil done, if your running Toyota Forlife coolant, iirc it cannot be mixed with anything else, but Toyota Forlife coolant. Jake
Originally posted by NWS25 More fool you then, you should top up with coolant not water Is that true?
Steve Cargill
Originally posted by Jake Is that true? Yes., very true. It keeps the concentration up and the fulid fresher, using water will dilute it - there are probably other reasons also.
Jake
I see. What about if you were unsure what coolant was in there?Given what Nick said about some coolants should not be mixed with others I suppose it'd be safer to top up with water then, correct? dandan
I used deionised water and a good antifreeze when I flushed mine through.
Terminator
IMHO it is better to run{for a short time) with the addition of water to the system rather than add nothing. If you nkow how much water you added you couldalway syphon the same amount out and replace with the red stuff, the additional dilution would probably be negligible. Scooter
there's a long thread in Mkiv.com about doing a coolant change, in which it says about adjusting the coolant /water ratio depending on the climate range the individual car will see. Anyone do that.......i doubt it....... I can't see topping up with water doing any harm unless its a continual situation that will lead to higher dilution over time, but this would point to something else probably being wrong anyway............
