Doughie Posted September 25, 2001 Share Posted September 25, 2001 I think it's 5 or 5.5 litres, when you change the filter. BTW, the filter change is a big of a nightmare simply because it's very hard to make enough room to get the damn thing out. Easiest to get it out form underneath the car apparently, but obviously for that you'll need ramps or axle stands. To get it out from the top, you need to undo the bolts for the PAS reservoir and push that to one side in order to make enough room to get the old filter out and the new filter in. Grade recommended is 10w-30 fully synthetic. Valvoline Synpower is very good stuff, and widely used by people on this BBS. It's not too expensive either and is available via SHOP ! It's directly above the suspension mounts and even if I removed the plastic undertray it's still a sod to get at. I can get a grip on it from above but the dam thing seems to be welded on!!! Doughie Posted September 25, 2001 Share Posted September 25, 2001 yep i gave up in the end as it was such a faff... are you sure there's room to actually pull it out compeltely ? and when putting the new filter on, you should fill that filter as much as possible with engine oil before screwing it in place. Unfortuantely the filter is at an angle, and so this may result in the oil spilling everywhere........ Toyota really didn't give much consideration to home mechanics !! (this was with the PAS Reservoir unbolted) We have got a oil filter remover claw thing... (think it was purchased from Halfords) so we managed to get the filter to budge using that... Phil Wall Posted September 25, 2001 Share Posted September 25, 2001 I change my oil and filter every 2000- 2500miles. Have used both Castrol semi Magnitec and Valvoline Synpower. The latter is much better, not going so dark as the Castrol over the same miles. I always get at my filter from under the car, with access right back near the fuel filter. I use a strap wrench with freshly applied violin rosin. Usually put a reg under the filter, it catches most oil but do expect some on your arm. I quickly fill the filter with oil and let it soak for a few minutes then top up to about 3/4 full so it does not run down my arm. I always use a new washer on the sump bolt. If you are filling direct from the oil can, it is worth putting some rag down the side of the cam cover to stop oil going down the side of the engine. Nick Posted September 25, 2001 Author Share Posted September 25, 2001 I gave up trying to twist it off with my hands and used a chain wrench, came off no problem then. I found it useful to unbolt the dipstick mounting bracket first, gives you a bit more room. Maybe the VVT-i is different, I found it a bit tight but no real hassle to get the filter off from the top. I didn't want to mess around underneath, the undertray is bolted on along with the Veilside bumper at the front and that is best left well alone!! Thanks for your help. And once you havge done the filter once you should be able to easly get it off next time by hand. If not then you are doing it too tight. p.s.
