Single turbo installation advice

Recommended Posts

Im in the middle of putting my single on, but have come across a few bits that id like advice on, from someone who has done this before.

1. The oil drain pipe (see 1st pic) how do i attach it with that bloody big nut and stud being in the way, i can attach it using the side on the drain pipe (pic 2) that has the 45% angled end, but this, im sure is to attach to the turbo :help: The straight side, will not go on, even with removing the studs etc for drain hole.

2. The pipes that come from the heater matrix (i think) (pic 3) i know one goes to the bottom left hand side of engine (pic 4, circled), am i right in saying, the right hand side pipe coming out of firewall, one with pipe facing down on pic 3, goes to the bottom of engine?

Where does the other one attach?

3. The vaccum pipe (pic 3) where does that attach to, or is i blocked off/not used?

And that concludes my questions for today :D

Any advice would be much appreciated :)

Oh, and i will give my engine, and bay, a good clean before anyone says anything, its a work in progress

First pic,

Had the same problem.

You can get different fittments for this. Think its a 45 degree angle on the flange comming out out the block thats needed.

I seem to remember another member used the original fittings somehow??

Call me a Butcher but i ground that bolt down untill it cleared!

You need to attach the return pipe to the flange first and then fit it to the block/pan to get it to fit on (after grinding the bolt down obviuosly)

jake, thanks for the pics :) they help alot :)

im going from this thread

Dudes single

he put his oil return pipe the 45% way, until someone said its the wrong way, i can get it to fit that way, but only because ive modified the aluminium block (on oil return pipe) so the tapered thread will screw right in. It wont fit otherwise.

So you say the rear water pipe attaches to the cylinder head? i couldve swore i took it off the turbo system somewhere  thats why its facing the way it is, whereas yours goes the other way :help:

Veilside... i was tempted to grind it down, but thought that was way too rough :D i dont think it will turn around either jake, its not a striaght through bolt ( i dont think, but ive been known to be wrong, alot ;)), but some nice lateral thinking there

Jake what oil feed air you using for your turbo? Looks as if you're using the rear one.

As for the thread, Dude did have the return round the way Jake shows and then removed it after Terry S, I believe, told him it was round the wrong way.

It was Kean from BL that told him it was the wrong way around. :) That bolt is something to do with the steering rack and obviously as the Yanks are LHD they are not seeing the same problems as us.

It is mate. I know because I have fitted the one one my grey car like that.

Exactly right. It's one of the two bolts that secure the rack to the subframe cross member. On a wrong-hand drive car it's on the other side.

that solves that one then, i'll turn it around, if the ickle bugger will come off :)

so just to double check on the rear water pipe (lhs coming from heater matrix) it goes in to the top rear of the cylinder head?

I'll have a look to see if i can find this, thanks for the replies :D

Its a 1st class pain in the arse getting the twins off mate, i gave myself lots of spanner rash!

erm, i cant really remember to be honest :(

What i did tho, is take the front turbo off, this gives you more room to play, cover everything in wd40, and then you need a ratchet spanner, with about a million different wobble bars on. I also used a small 14mm spanner (ring end on the nuts) and shocked them (bashed with hammer on spanner) to break the nut free, because they have been on there so long, they dont want to come off :( so a bit of shock treatment works wonders.

good luck

You got me thinking about this today. I tried to test fit my -8 to two -6 Y adaptor with twin -6 45deg fittings going up to the hoses. Even without a fitting flange, (as I'm going twin turbo I need two fittings!) so I've decided to go for a -8 female to twin -6 male T piece, with a -6 45 degree fitting to the rearmost turbo and a -6 90 degree fitting to the front. Obviously that doesn't help you much, however, if you can't fit the hose any other way, try checking out the thinkauto site for an alternative compact -6 hose fitting. If you do a search for this part no. HEFA9C7-6DS it should come up with a compact fitting for £14 odd that should do the trick:-
